Caribbean cruises: how to choose between Eastern, Western and Southern routes
The Caribbean is the most popular cruise region for travelers from the US and Canada. Here's how the three main routes differ, when to go, which port to leave from, and what documents you need.

Eastern, Western or Southern Caribbean?
Caribbean itineraries fall into three broad routes. None is better than the others: they suit different trips, and many people sail all three over the years.
- Eastern Caribbean: often St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Maarten and San Juan, Puerto Rico, sometimes with a stop in the Bahamas. Great beaches, easy shopping and calm, well-trodden ports, which makes it a popular first cruise.
- Western Caribbean: typically Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico, Roatán in Honduras, Belize, Grand Cayman and Jamaica. More adventure on shore: Mayan ruins, reef snorkeling, cave tubing and zip lines.
- Southern Caribbean: islands such as Aruba, Curaçao, Barbados, St. Lucia and Antigua. They're farther from Florida, so these sailings are usually 7 nights or longer, or leave from San Juan or Barbados.
When to go
December to April brings the driest, most comfortable weather, and the most demand: holiday weeks and spring break sell out first and cost the most.
Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 and is most active from August to October. Ships sail through it and change course to avoid storms, which can mean swapping or skipping a port. Summer and early fall often offer better value; if you sail then, stay flexible about ports and consider travel insurance.
Choosing a departure port
Leaving from a port you can drive to saves on flights and takes the stress out of travel day. Florida has the most sailings and the widest choice of ships. Galveston and New Orleans are convenient for Texas and the central US and mostly sail to the Western Caribbean.
If you fly, arrive the day before. A delayed flight on embarkation day is the most common way to miss a ship, and the ship won't wait.
Documents you'll need
US citizens on a round-trip cruise that starts and ends at the same US port can generally travel with an original birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID. A valid passport is still strongly recommended: if you need to leave the cruise early and fly home from a foreign port, you'll need one. Canadian citizens should travel with a passport.
Rules can change and some islands have their own requirements, so check with your cruise line and official government travel advice before you sail.
What to budget for
