Baja getaway or Mexican Riviera?
- Baja cruises are short, usually 3 or 4 nights, and typically call at Ensenada, sometimes with a stop at Catalina Island. They're an easy weekend escape for anyone within driving distance of the port.
- Mexican Riviera cruises are usually 7 nights and sail farther south to Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlán, with sea days in between. Expect beaches, snorkeling, sport fishing and colonial towns.
When to go
November to April brings warm, dry weather and is the most popular time to go. Winter is also whale season: gray and humpback whales are often seen around Baja California and Banderas Bay, near Puerto Vallarta.
Summer is hot and humid, and the eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from mid-May to the end of November, which can change itineraries.
Getting to the port
Most sailings leave from the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro, Long Beach or San Diego. If you live in the Southwest, driving to the port can save the cost of flights; if you fly, arrive the day before.
