Western or Eastern Mediterranean?
- Western Mediterranean: Spain, France and Italy, with ports such as Barcelona, Marseille, Civitavecchia for Rome, Livorno for Florence and Pisa, and Naples. Big-name cities, art and food.
- Eastern Mediterranean: the Greek islands, Athens, the Adriatic coast around Dubrovnik and, on some sailings, Türkiye. Island hopping, ancient sites and whitewashed villages.
A port-intensive trip
Mediterranean cruises usually have a port nearly every day, and some famous sights are a train or coach ride from where the ship docks. Plan which days you'll explore on your own and which you'd rather book a tour, and expect busy days.
At a few smaller ports, ships anchor offshore and take guests ashore by tender boat, which adds time at the start and end of the day.
When to go
The main season runs from April to October. Late spring and early fall bring pleasant temperatures and slightly smaller crowds. July and August are hot and busy at the most popular sights.
Flights and arriving early
Fly in at least a day or two before the cruise starts. It absorbs flight delays and jet lag, and cities such as Barcelona, Rome and Athens are worth time on their own. Consider a one-way itinerary if it lets you see more.
