Cruises from Tampa sail year-round, mostly four- to seven-night Western Caribbean trips to Cozumel, Progreso, Costa Maya, Belize, Roatán and Grand Cayman, plus Key West and some Bahamas itineraries. Port Tampa Bay’s terminals sit right downtown in the Channel District, about 15 minutes from the airport, and the mid-size ships here suit travelers who prefer a calmer, easier embarkation than at the megaship ports.

Sailing from Tampa
Port Tampa Bay is Florida’s main Gulf Coast cruise port, and its terminals sit in the Channel District, a walkable waterfront neighborhood of apartments, restaurants and the Florida Aquarium on the edge of downtown. Ships leave through Tampa Bay and pass beneath the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, whose height limits the size of ship that can sail here. That’s why you won’t find the very largest megaships in Tampa, and why many cruisers like it.
Itineraries focus on Mexico and the Western Caribbean, which is a day closer from the Gulf than from Florida’s east coast. Four- and five-night cruises visit Cozumel and Progreso, sometimes with Key West; seven-night trips add Costa Maya, Roatán, Belize City, Grand Cayman or Jamaica. Carnival and Royal Caribbean have ships here year-round, Margaritaville at Sea’s Islander sails short Mexico and Key West trips, and premium lines including Celebrity, Oceania and Regent add seasonal sailings.
Tampa is a natural pick for drivers from central and west Florida, Georgia and Alabama, and for fly-in cruisers who want a short airport ride. If your heart is set on the newest, biggest ships, or on the Eastern and Southern Caribbean, look to Miami, Fort Lauderdale or Port Canaveral instead.

Port Tampa Bay cruise terminals
Port Tampa Bay operates several cruise terminals along Channelside Drive, within a few minutes of one another and close to the Florida Aquarium and Sparkman Wharf. Assignments vary by ship and season, so check the terminal number on your boarding documents. Embarkation is usually straightforward: drop your checked bags with porters at the curb, then head inside for security and check-in. Because the ships are mid-size, lines are typically shorter than at the big east-coast ports, but still arrive in your assigned window. All aboard is generally an hour or more before departure, and sail-away is in the late afternoon.
Getting to the port
Flying in
Tampa International (TPA) is about 9 miles (14 km) from the cruise terminals, typically 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or rideshare. St. Pete–Clearwater International (PIE), used by several budget airlines, is 30 to 40 minutes away. Orlando International (MCO) is roughly an hour and a half by road, an option if fares are much lower there. Some lines sell transfers from TPA.
Driving
From I-4 or I-275, follow signs for downtown and the Selmon Expressway, then exit toward Channelside Drive; the Selmon is a toll road. From Orlando, the drive is about 85 miles (137 km) along I-4. Downtown traffic can be slow on weekday afternoons and during big events at the nearby arena.
Parking
The port operates a parking garage and surface lots beside the cruise terminals, charged per day and paid on arrival, with areas for oversized vehicles. Off-site lots and hotels with park-and-cruise packages are fewer than in south Florida but do exist around downtown and the airport. Arrive in good time on peak holiday weekends, when the port’s own parking fills.
Where to stay before a cruise from Tampa
Hotels in the Channel District and along Water Street are within walking distance of the terminals, though most people still take a short taxi with luggage. Downtown and the Riverwalk put you near restaurants and museums. Ybor City, a short streetcar ride away, has historic hotels in Tampa’s old cigar district. Westshore, near the airport, has the most choice for late arrivals. If you want a beach night first, Clearwater Beach and St. Pete Beach are 30 to 45 minutes away.
Things to do in Tampa before or after your cruise
- 1
The Florida Aquarium
family
Next door to the cruise terminals, the aquarium’s glass-domed building holds a walk-through wetlands gallery, a large coral reef tank and an outdoor splash area for kids. It’s an ideal way to spend a few hours on arrival day, and you can see your ship from the waterfront outside.
- 2
Ybor City
history
Tampa’s historic Latin quarter was built around cigar factories in the late 1800s by Cuban, Spanish and Italian immigrants. Wander Seventh Avenue’s wrought-iron balconies, watch cigars being hand-rolled, visit the Ybor City Museum State Park and eat at the Columbia Restaurant, a family-run Spanish-Cuban institution since 1905. The TECO Line streetcar runs here from the Channel District.
- 3
Tampa Riverwalk
scenery
A paved path of about 2.5 miles (4 km) along the Hillsborough River and Garrison Channel connects the Channel District with downtown parks, museums and restaurants. It passes the Tampa Bay History Center and the minarets of the University of Tampa’s Plant Hall across the river. Rent a bike or simply walk a stretch at sunset.
- 4
Sparkman Wharf
food
Steps from the terminals, this waterfront food hall serves its dishes from converted shipping containers around a lawn with a beer garden and evening music. It’s an easy, casual dinner the night before a cruise, with plenty of choice for groups who can’t agree on one restaurant.
- 5
Busch Gardens Tampa Bay
family
About 20 minutes north of downtown, this theme park pairs some of Florida’s most intense roller coasters with an African-themed animal park and a safari-style ride among giraffes, zebras and rhinos. It needs a full day, so plan it before your cruise rather than squeezing it in on embarkation day.
- 6
Clearwater Beach and the Dalí Museum
beach
Across the bay, Clearwater Beach has soft white sand, calm Gulf water and a pier known for sunsets. On the way, downtown St. Petersburg’s Dalí Museum holds one of the largest collections of Salvador Dalí’s work outside Europe in a striking glass-and-concrete building. Together they make a full pre-cruise day.

Embarkation day tips
- Head up on deck for the sail-out. Ships spend a few hours crossing Tampa Bay and pass under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, a dramatic sight from the top decks, usually in the early evening.
- The TECO Line streetcar connects the Channel District to Ybor City, so you can go out for dinner the night before without moving the car.
- Late January brings the Gasparilla Pirate Festival, when a pirate ship ‘invades’ the waterfront and big parades close downtown streets. If you sail around then, allow extra time to reach the port.
- Ships arrive back in Tampa early in the morning after the slow trip up the bay. Fog occasionally delays arrivals in winter, so avoid booking early-morning flights home.
- Check the arena schedule if you’re driving in on an embarkation day; a big game or concert nearby can clog Channelside Drive in the afternoon.
Cruises from Tampa: FAQs
Why are cruise ships in Tampa smaller?
Because of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Ships must pass beneath it to reach the Gulf of Mexico, and its clearance rules out the tallest megaships. Tampa is served by mid-size ships, which many cruisers find quicker to board and easier to navigate.
How far is the Tampa cruise port from Tampa International Airport?
About 9 miles, or 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or rideshare in normal traffic. It’s one of the easier airport-to-ship journeys in Florida, though weekday rush hour downtown can add time.
Can you walk to the Tampa cruise terminals from downtown hotels?
Yes, from Channel District and Water Street hotels it’s a short walk of 5 to 15 minutes. With heavy luggage or in summer heat, most people take a quick taxi or rideshare instead.
Where do cruises from Tampa go?
Mainly to Mexico and the Western Caribbean: Cozumel, Progreso, Costa Maya, Belize City, Roatán, Grand Cayman and Jamaica. Some itineraries include Key West or the Bahamas, and a few longer voyages reach farther into the Caribbean.
Which cruise lines sail from Tampa?
Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Margaritaville at Sea sail from Tampa year-round. Celebrity, Oceania and Regent Seven Seas add seasonal departures, mostly between fall and spring.
Is parking available at the Tampa cruise port?
Yes. Port Tampa Bay runs a garage and surface lots next to the terminals, charged by the day. It’s the simplest choice, though a few nearby hotels offer park-and-cruise packages that bundle a pre-cruise night with parking.
