Juneau cruise port guide
Juneau is Alaska's capital, a small city squeezed between steep mountains and the Gastineau Channel with no road connection to the rest of North America. Ships dock right downtown, and the big draws are the Mendenhall Glacier, some of the most reliable humpback whale watching in Alaska, helicopter trips to dog-sled camps on the icefield and the Mount Roberts Tramway.

About Juneau
Juneau feels both like a capital and a frontier town: the state capitol and government offices sit a few blocks from gold-rush-era saloons and souvenir shops, while waterfalls stream down the mountainsides above. Bald eagles are a common sight, and the Juneau Icefield stretches for miles behind the peaks.
Most cruisers pick one big excursion: a whale-watching boat from Auke Bay, a visit to the Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls, or a helicopter flight to land on a glacier, sometimes with a dog-sledding session on the ice. With extra time, you can ride the tram up Mount Roberts from the cruise dock or try a local brewery.
Juneau is a superb port for wildlife, glaciers and adventure. It's often rainy and can feel crowded downtown when several ships are in, and helicopter and floatplane tours depend on the weather and are among the costliest excursions in Alaska.
Where cruise ships dock in Juneau
Ships dock at several berths along the downtown waterfront, so there's usually no tendering, although on very busy days a ship may anchor and tender. Shops, restaurants, the Red Dog Saloon and the Mount Roberts Tramway base station are steps from the docks. The Mendenhall Glacier is about 12 miles (19 km) from downtown, around 20 to 25 minutes by shuttle bus, which runs from the waterfront throughout the day. Auke Bay, where most whale-watching boats leave, is about 25 minutes away. The city limits how many large ships can visit each day, but the waterfront still gets busy.
Best things to do in Juneau on a cruise
- 1
Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls
nature
This glacier flows from the Juneau Icefield into Mendenhall Lake. From the visitor center, an easy trail of about 2 miles (3 km) round trip leads to Nugget Falls, which crashes down beside the glacier's face. The glacier has retreated significantly in recent decades, and the visitor center explains how it has changed.
- 2
Whale watching
wildlife
The waters around Juneau are summer feeding grounds for humpback whales, and many operators offer a sighting guarantee. Orcas, sea lions, porpoises and bald eagles are also common. Tours usually last three to four hours including transport, and some combine whale watching with a Mendenhall Glacier stop.
- 3
Helicopter glacier landing and dog sledding
adventure
Helicopters fly over the Juneau Icefield and land on a glacier, where some tours visit a dog-sled camp for a ride behind a team of huskies. It's an exhilarating, once-in-a-lifetime experience, but it's expensive and frequently canceled in poor weather.
- 4
Mount Roberts Tramway
scenery
The tram climbs from the cruise dock area to about 1,800 feet (550 m) on Mount Roberts, where trails, a nature center and a restaurant offer views over Juneau and the Gastineau Channel. It's an easy option on a cloudy day if the summit is clear.
- 5
Alaska State Museum
culture
A short walk from the docks, this museum covers Alaska's Native cultures, Russian era, gold rush and natural history, with impressive artifacts and art. It's a good choice for a rainy afternoon.
- 6
Salmon bake
food
Several outdoor venues serve wild salmon grilled over an open fire in a forest setting, sometimes near a waterfall. It's a popular, family-friendly excursion that combines a meal with scenery.
- 7
Sealaska Heritage Institute
culture
The Walter Soboleff Building downtown showcases the art and cultures of the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples, with exhibits and a clan house. It's an easy walk from the cruise docks.

What to eat and drink in Juneau
Juneau is a great place for seafood: try halibut fish and chips, king crab legs, salmon in every form and Dungeness crab from the waterfront crab shacks. Reindeer sausage is a common street snack. The local brewery, Alaskan Brewing Company, is famous for its amber ale, and you can sample it around town. Downtown has cafés and seafood restaurants within easy walking distance of the docks.
Tips for your port day
- Bring a rain jacket and layers; Juneau is often wet and cool, even in summer.
- Book helicopter and floatplane tours with a backup plan; they're often canceled in bad weather and cruise lines refund canceled ship's tours.
- Use the Mendenhall Glacier shuttle buses for an inexpensive independent visit.
- If multiple ships are in, go to popular sites early or late to avoid crowds.
- Carry binoculars for spotting whales, eagles and mountain goats.
