About Nassau

Nassau mixes pastel colonial buildings, government offices painted flamingo pink, straw markets and duty-free stores with the glitz of resort hotels and the massive Atlantis complex across the harbor on Paradise Island. It has a lively, sometimes chaotic energy, especially when several megaships are in port. Bahamian culture shines through in Junkanoo music, conch stands and friendly locals.

The port is easy for first-time cruisers, families and anyone who wants options, from history walks and beaches to water parks and boat trips. Downtown can feel crowded and commercial, and beaches near the port are busy, so a short taxi or water-taxi ride makes a big difference. Many short Bahamas cruises call here, often alongside a private-island day.

Where cruise ships dock in Nassau

Ships dock at the Nassau Cruise Port at Prince George Wharf in the heart of downtown. The redeveloped terminal area has shops, restaurants, a Junkanoo museum and an amphitheater, and Bay Street is a short walk away. Junkanoo Beach is about 10 minutes on foot. Taxis wait outside with set fares, and water taxis cross the harbor to Paradise Island and Atlantis in about 15 minutes. Cable Beach is about 15 to 20 minutes by taxi. The Queen’s Staircase and Fort Fincastle are a 10- to 15-minute walk uphill from the port.

Best things to do in Nassau on a cruise

  1. 1

    Atlantis Paradise Island

    family

A huge resort with a casino, shops, restaurants and the Aquaventure water park, with slides, a river ride and pools. The Dig and marine habitats showcase sharks, rays and tropical fish. Day passes for the water park are limited and expensive, so reserve ahead, often through your ship.

  2. 2

    Queen’s Staircase and Fort Fincastle

    history

The Queen’s Staircase, 66 limestone steps carved by enslaved people in the late 1700s, leads up through a shady gorge to Fort Fincastle, a small 18th-century fort shaped like a paddle steamer, with views over the harbor. It’s an easy walk from the port.

  3. 3

    Cable Beach

    beach

A long, sandy beach west of downtown, lined with resorts such as Baha Mar, with calm water and water-sports rentals. It’s less crowded than Junkanoo Beach and about 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or local jitney bus.

  4. 4

    Arawak Cay Fish Fry

    food

A cluster of brightly painted stalls and restaurants west of downtown, where locals and visitors go for fresh conch salad, fried fish, cracked conch and cold Kalik beer. Watch your conch salad being made with lime, peppers and onions. It’s about 15 minutes’ walk or a short taxi ride from the port.

  5. 5

Blue Lagoon Island and Rose Island

    beach

Boat trips from Nassau visit nearby islands for beach days, snorkeling and animal encounters. Blue Lagoon Island offers dolphin and sea lion programs, while trips to Rose Island often include swimming with pigs and snorkeling over reefs.

  6. 6

    John Watling’s Distillery

    food

A rum distillery in a historic 18th-century estate on the edge of downtown, with free tours, tastings and a bar. The grounds and Georgian buildings are attractive, and it’s about a 10- to 15-minute walk from the port.

  7. 7

    Straw Market and Bay Street

    shopping

Bay Street has duty-free jewelry, watches and liquor, while the Straw Market sells straw bags, carvings, T-shirts and souvenirs. Bargaining is common at the market, and quality varies. Look for items labeled as made in the Bahamas.

What to eat and drink in Nassau

Conch is the essential Bahamian food: try fresh conch salad with lime and peppers, cracked conch (battered and fried) and conch fritters. Peas ’n’ rice, Bahamian mac and cheese and fried fish are common sides. For dessert, look for guava duff, a steamed pastry with guava and sweet sauce. Drinks include Kalik and Sands beers, a Goombay Smash or a Bahama Mama. The Arawak Cay Fish Fry is the best place to eat like a local.

Tips for your port day

  • Use licensed taxis and agree on fares before you go; fares are set by zone and often per person.
  • Reserve Atlantis day passes ahead of time; they’re limited and sell out on busy days.
  • Junkanoo Beach is closest but crowded; Cable Beach or a boat trip to a nearby island offers more space.
  • Be firm with vendors and hair braiders, and keep valuables out of sight downtown.
  • Check the U.S. State Department advisory for the Bahamas and stick to tourist areas, especially after dark.
