About King's Wharf
The Royal Naval Dockyard was Britain’s main naval base in the western Atlantic for over a century, and its massive limestone walls, clock towers and warehouses now house museums, craft markets, restaurants and shops. Bermuda itself is a compact, hilly chain of islands with pastel cottages, white stepped roofs, manicured gardens and pink-tinged beaches, more like a polished British seaside town than a Caribbean island.
Bermuda cruises from the U.S. Northeast typically spend two or three days here, so you have time to see the whole island. It suits beach lovers, history buffs and families who like a safe, orderly destination. The season runs mainly from spring through fall, and the water is cooler than in the Caribbean, especially early and late in the season. There are no rental cars for visitors, so you’ll rely on ferries, buses, taxis or small electric cars and scooters.
Where cruise ships dock in King's Wharf
Ships dock at King’s Wharf or the adjacent Heritage Wharf within the Royal Naval Dockyard, at the western tip of the island. The dockyard’s museum, shops, restaurants and Snorkel Park Beach are a short walk away. Ferries run from the dockyard to Hamilton in about 20 minutes and, on many days, to St. George’s; public buses also go to Hamilton and the South Shore beaches. Multi-day transportation passes are sold at the dockyard. Horseshoe Bay is about 20 to 30 minutes by taxi or bus. Taxis are metered and fairly expensive.
Best things to do in King's Wharf on a cruise
- 1
National Museum of Bermuda
history
Housed in the Keep, a fortress within the dockyard, and the grand Commissioner’s House, this museum covers Bermuda’s maritime and social history, from shipwrecks to slavery and emancipation. The ramparts offer sweeping views. Allow at least two hours.
- 2
Horseshoe Bay Beach
beach
Bermuda’s most famous beach, a curve of pink-tinged sand with turquoise water and rocky coves, on the South Shore. It has facilities and rentals in season and gets busy on cruise days. Walk east along the coastal trail to quieter coves like Chaplin Bay and Warwick Long Bay.
- 3
Crystal and Fantasy Caves
nature
Two limestone caves near Hamilton Parish with still, glassy underground pools, stalactites and floating pontoon walkways. A visit to one cave lasts roughly an hour. They’re on the other side of the island, so combine it with St. George’s.
- 4
Snorkel Park Beach
beach
A small, sheltered beach right in the dockyard, with snorkeling among cannons and reef fish, rentals and a beach bar. It’s convenient and easy, though livelier than the South Shore beaches.
- 5
Gibbs Hill Lighthouse
scenery
One of the oldest cast-iron lighthouses in the world, in Southampton Parish. Climb the steps to the balcony for 360-degree views over the island and the reefs. There’s a restaurant at the base.
- 6
Hamilton and St. George’s
culture
Take the ferry to Hamilton, Bermuda’s capital, for Front Street shops and harbor views, or to St. George’s, a UNESCO World Heritage town founded in 1612, with narrow lanes and historic churches. Both make easy day trips from the dockyard.
- 7
Shipwreck and glass-bottom boat tours
wildlife
Bermuda’s reefs have claimed hundreds of ships over the centuries. Snorkel and glass-bottom boat tours from the dockyard visit wrecks and reefs with abundant marine life, an easy way to see Bermuda’s underwater world.

What to eat and drink in King's Wharf
Try Bermuda fish chowder, a rich, dark soup traditionally laced with black rum and sherry pepper sauce. The Bermuda fish sandwich, fried fish on raisin bread with coleslaw and tartar sauce, is a local classic. Sunday codfish breakfast is a tradition. The Dark ’n Stormy, made with Gosling’s Black Seal rum and ginger beer, and the Rum Swizzle are Bermuda’s signature cocktails. Bermuda rum cake makes a good souvenir.
Tips for your port day
- Buy a multi-day transportation pass for unlimited ferries and buses; it’s the best value for getting around.
- Visitors can’t rent regular cars, but small electric cars and scooters are available; traffic drives on the left.
- Bring a light jacket in spring and fall; Bermuda is cooler than the Caribbean, especially in the evenings.
- Use your multiple days wisely: one beach day, one historic day and one at the dockyard or caves works well.
- Respect the dress code in town; swimwear isn’t appropriate away from the beach.
