About Nawiliwili

Nicknamed the Garden Isle, Kauai is wetter, wilder and less developed than its neighbors, with local rules keeping buildings no taller than a coconut palm and a landscape of jungle-draped ridges and deep valleys. Feral chickens roam everywhere, from beach parks to parking lots, and the pace of life is slow. Many films, from South Pacific to Jurassic Park, used its scenery.

Cruise visitors usually pick one big adventure: the drive west to Waimea Canyon and the Kōkeʻe lookouts, a boat trip along the Nā Pali Coast, a helicopter flight over the interior or a Wailua River kayak to a waterfall. Those who prefer to keep it simple can walk from the ship to Kalapaki Beach, visit Wailua Falls or browse Kilohana Plantation.

Kauai suits nature lovers, hikers, photographers and anyone looking for a quieter side of Hawaii. Rain is frequent in many areas, drives to the main scenery take time, and the famous North Shore is a long way from port on a single day.

Where cruise ships dock in Nawiliwili

Ships dock at Nawiliwili Harbor, about 2 miles (3 km) from Līhuʻe, Kauai’s main town. Kalapaki Beach is a short walk from the pier, past a resort and shops. Taxis, rideshares, rental car shuttles and tour buses meet the ship; the airport, where helicopter tours depart, is about 10 minutes away. Wailua Falls is about 15 minutes north, Poʻipū around 30 minutes south, Waimea Canyon roughly an hour and a half west and Hanalei on the North Shore about an hour or more. Pride of America overnights here, giving time for longer outings.

Best things to do in Nawiliwili on a cruise

  1. 1

Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe State Park

    scenery

Often called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, Waimea Canyon is a 10-mile gorge of red, orange and green cliffs carved by rivers and collapse. Lookouts along the road give big views, and at the top, the Kalalau Lookout gazes down into a Nā Pali valley when clouds allow. Go early, before clouds build.

  2. 2

    Nā Pali Coast by boat

    nature

The Nā Pali Coast’s fluted green cliffs rise thousands of feet from the sea and can’t be reached by road. Catamaran and raft tours from Port Allen, on the south shore, cruise along the coast, often with dolphin sightings and snorkeling. Summer usually brings the calmest seas.

  3. 3

    Helicopter tour

    adventure

Much of Kauai’s interior is reachable only by air. Flights from the airport near Līhuʻe pass over Waimea Canyon, the Nā Pali Coast and the waterfall-streaked walls of Mount Waiʻaleʻale’s crater. It’s one of the pricier excursions but the most complete view of the island.

  4. 4

    Wailua River and waterfalls

    nature

Kayak tours paddle up the Wailua River, Hawaii’s only navigable river, followed by a jungle hike to a waterfall. Nearby, Wailua Falls and ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls are easy roadside viewpoints, about 15 minutes from the port.

  5. 5

    Kalapaki Beach

    beach

Steps from the cruise pier, this crescent of golden sand on Nawiliwili Bay has gentle waves suited to swimming, stand-up paddleboarding and beginner surfing. Rentals and beachfront restaurants are nearby, making it the easiest relaxed option.

  6. 6

    Poʻipū and Spouting Horn

    wildlife

On the sunny south shore, Poʻipū Beach Park has calm swimming areas and frequent visits from Hawaiian monk seals and green sea turtles; keep your distance. Nearby, Spouting Horn is a blowhole that shoots seawater high into the air.

  7. 7

    Kilohana Plantation

    culture

A 1930s plantation estate near Līhuʻe with a mansion of shops and a restaurant, a narrow-gauge train ride through fields and orchards, and a rum tasting room. It’s a gentle, family-friendly outing close to the port.

What to eat and drink in Nawiliwili

Look for poke, plate lunches, saimin and huli huli chicken from roadside stands. Kauai grows coffee, and its sweet shortbread cookies and local rum make good souvenirs. Taro, grown in the North Shore’s flooded fields, appears as poi and in desserts. Shave ice with tropical syrups, ideally over ice cream, is the perfect beach snack.

Tips for your port day

  • Head to Waimea Canyon early. Clouds often roll in by late morning and hide the views.
  • Book helicopter and Nā Pali boat tours in advance, and check weather and sea conditions the day before.
  • Kauai’s North Shore is about an hour or more away with heavy traffic at times. Don’t attempt it on a short port day.
  • Keep at least 50 feet from Hawaiian monk seals and 10 feet from turtles. Both are protected by law.
  • Watch the ship’s departure from an open deck: some itineraries, including Pride of America, sail past the Nā Pali Coast when leaving Kauai, weather permitting.
