About Saint John
Saint John was founded by Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution in 1783 and became Canada’s first incorporated city. After a great fire in 1877, it was rebuilt in brick and stone, and Uptown’s ornate facades, steep streets and red-brick warehouses still give it a solid, 19th-century look. Its character is working port rather than polished resort, which many visitors find refreshing.
Everything here revolves around the Bay of Fundy, whose tides rise and fall more than anywhere else on Earth. Twice a day, billions of tons of seawater surge in and out, reversing the rapids where the Saint John River meets the sea, flooding sea caves and exposing the ocean floor. Most cruisers either explore Uptown and the Reversing Falls or take a longer tour to Hopewell Rocks or the Fundy coast.
Saint John suits nature lovers, curious travelers and anyone happy with a low-key city. Tides don’t follow your ship’s schedule, so some sights look dramatic only at certain hours, and fog off the bay is common.
Where cruise ships dock in Saint John
Ships dock at the cruise terminal on the edge of Uptown Saint John, and Kings Square and the City Market are within a 10- to 15-minute walk, though streets climb steeply. The Reversing Falls are about 10 minutes away by taxi or a 30- to 40-minute walk. Irving Nature Park is about 15 minutes by road, St. Martins about 45 minutes, St. Andrews about an hour and a quarter and Hopewell Rocks roughly two hours. Allow three hours for Uptown and the falls, or most of the day for Hopewell Rocks.
Best things to do in Saint John on a cruise
- 1
Reversing Falls Rapids
nature
Where the Saint John River squeezes through a narrow gorge to meet the bay, the incoming tide overpowers the river and reverses the rapids, creating whirlpools and churning water. A skywalk with a glass floor and lookouts lets you watch the show. What you see depends on the tide at the time of your visit.
- 2
Hopewell Rocks
nature
About two hours away, giant sandstone sea stacks topped with trees, nicknamed the flowerpots, stand on a beach that’s flooded at high tide. At low tide, you can walk on the ocean floor among them. Tours time visits with the tide; check what you’ll see.
- 3
Saint John City Market
food
Operating since 1876, Canada’s oldest continuing farmers market occupies a long hall whose wooden roof resembles an upturned ship’s hull. Stalls sell lobster, smoked salmon, cheese, maple products and dulse, a dried seaweed snack locals love.
- 4
Uptown walking tour
history
Wander King Street and the streets around Kings Square to see grand Victorian buildings rebuilt after the 1877 fire, the Loyalist Burial Ground and the old Trinity Church. Look for the Loyalist House, an elegant early 19th-century home.
- 5
New Brunswick Museum
family
Near the waterfront at Market Square, the provincial museum covers natural history, art and the maritime trades, with a full-size whale skeleton hanging in the gallery and exhibits explaining the Fundy tides.
- 6
St. Martins sea caves and Fundy Trail
scenery
About 45 minutes east, the fishing village of St. Martins has red sandstone sea caves you can walk into at low tide and twin covered bridges. Farther on, the Fundy Trail Parkway winds along dramatic cliffs with lookouts over the bay.
- 7
St. Andrews by-the-Sea
culture
A genteel seaside resort town about an hour and a quarter west, with colorful shops, whale-watching boats and the themed gardens of Kingsbrae Garden. It makes a relaxed half-day trip, often paired with a coastal drive.

What to eat and drink in Saint John
Lobster, scallops and seafood chowder are staples. At the City Market, try dulse, smoked salmon and fiddleheads, the curled young ferns harvested in spring. New Brunswick is known for blueberries and maple syrup, and Moosehead beer has long been brewed in Saint John. Look for a lobster roll at one of the Uptown restaurants.
Tips for your port day
- Check the tide times on the day of your call; they determine what you’ll see at the Reversing Falls and Hopewell Rocks.
- Hopewell Rocks is about two hours each way. Choose a ship tour or a reliable driver, and keep an eye on time.
- Wear good walking shoes. Uptown’s streets are steep.
- Bring layers and a rain jacket. Fog and cool winds from the bay are common even in summer.
- Canadian dollars give the best value. U.S. dollars may be accepted at a less favorable rate, and cards work almost everywhere.
