Cruises from Papeete
Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia on the island of Tahiti, is the departure point for small-ship cruises through the Society Islands, Tuamotus and Marquesas, running year-round on lines such as Paul Gauguin and Windstar. Ships dock right downtown, about 10 to 15 minutes from Faa’a International Airport, which has nonstop flights of roughly eight hours from Los Angeles and San Francisco. Most 7-night itineraries visit Moorea, Bora Bora, Huahine and Taha’a or Raiatea.

Sailing from Papeete
Papeete is where most cruises of French Polynesia begin and end, and it’s the only real city in a scattering of 118 islands spread across an area of ocean roughly the size of Western Europe. The classic itinerary is a 7-night loop of the Society Islands, typically Huahine, Raiatea and Taha’a, Bora Bora and Moorea, with plenty of time for snorkeling, lagoon excursions and beach days. Longer 10- to 14-night voyages add the coral atolls of the Tuamotus, such as Rangiroa and Fakarava, the rugged Marquesas or the Cook Islands.
This is mainly small-ship territory. Ships based here year-round carry a few hundred guests and often include water sports platforms, and luxury and expedition lines add seasonal voyages. Larger ships call at Papeete on Hawaii and South Pacific round trips from the US West Coast, but rarely start cruises here.
French Polynesia isn’t cheap, and Papeete itself is a busy, functional port town rather than a postcard. But the flight from California is shorter than a trip to Europe, and a night or two on Tahiti or Moorea before sailing lets you adjust to island time.
Where cruises from Papeete go
Cruise lines sailing from Papeete
Port of Papeete cruise terminals
Cruise ships berth along the downtown waterfront in central Papeete, a few minutes’ walk from the Papeete Market, shops and the Place Vaiete waterfront plaza. There’s a cruise terminal building, but processing is simple, as most ships here are small: drop off your luggage, check in and board, often starting in the afternoon. Some lines arrange hotel day rooms or hospitality areas for guests arriving on early-morning flights, so check what yours offers. The ferries to Moorea leave from a terminal nearby.
Getting to the port
Flying in
Faa’a International Airport (PPT) is about 3 miles (5 km) west of downtown Papeete, roughly 10 to 15 minutes by taxi or transfer. Air Tahiti Nui flies nonstop from Los Angeles and seasonally from Seattle, United flies from San Francisco, and other carriers, including Air France and Delta, link Papeete with Los Angeles. Flights take about eight hours from California, and many arrive late at night or very early in the morning. Air Tahiti, the domestic airline, connects Papeete with the outer islands.
Driving
Tahiti has one main coastal road that circles the larger part of the island, with a fast four-lane stretch between the airport and Papeete. Driving is on the right, as in North America. Traffic into Papeete can be slow at rush hour, but distances are short.
Parking
Parking near the downtown waterfront is limited and not designed for week-long stays, and few cruise passengers rent a car. Taxis and hotel shuttles are the normal way to reach the ship.
Where to stay before a cruise from Papeete
The west coast between the airport and Punaauia is the most popular choice, with resort hotels offering overwater bungalows, lagoon views and sunsets over Moorea, all 10 to 20 minutes from the port. Downtown Papeete has a few simpler hotels within walking distance of the ship, convenient for an early boarding. With extra days, many travelers take the ferry to Moorea, about 30 to 45 minutes away, for a resort stay before or after the cruise.
Things to do in Papeete before or after your cruise
- 1
Papeete Market
shopping
The two-story Marché de Papeete is the city’s heart, selling tropical fruit, fresh fish, flower garlands, pareos, monoi oil, vanilla pods and black-pearl jewelry. It’s busiest and most colorful early in the morning, especially on Sundays, and it’s a short walk from the cruise berth.
- 2
Roulottes at Place Vaiete
food
In the evenings, food trucks known as roulottes set up on the waterfront plaza and serve inexpensive local favorites: poisson cru (raw tuna marinated in lime and coconut milk), grilled mahi-mahi, Chinese-Tahitian chow mein and crêpes. It’s a relaxed, social scene and the best value meal in town.
- 3
Museum of Tahiti and the Islands
culture
On the west coast at Punaauia, the Musée de Tahiti et des Îles traces Polynesian navigation, settlement, religion and daily life, with displays of carvings, tapa cloth, tools and canoes. It’s a valuable primer before visiting the islands, and its seafront setting looks out toward Moorea.
- 4
Circle-island drive
scenery
A day tour around Tahiti Nui passes Point Venus, where Captain Cook observed the transit of Venus in 1769, the Arahoho blowhole, the Faarumai waterfalls and black-sand beaches. On the southwest coast, Teahupo’o is home to one of the world’s most famous surf breaks, used for the surfing events of the 2024 Olympics.
- 5
Papenoo Valley 4x4 tour
nature
Guided four-wheel-drive tours follow the Papenoo River into Tahiti’s volcanic interior, past waterfalls, swimming holes and archaeological sites (marae) beneath jungle-covered peaks. It’s a dramatic contrast to the coast and a great half-day before boarding; expect bumpy tracks and river crossings.
- 6
Moorea day trip
nature
Frequent ferries cross to Moorea in about 30 to 45 minutes. Hire a car or join a tour to the Belvedere lookout over Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay, swim with rays and sharks in the lagoon or relax on Temae beach. If your cruise also calls at Moorea, spend the time in Tahiti’s interior instead.

Embarkation day tips
- Plan to arrive at least one night early. Many flights land late at night or around dawn, and missing a once-weekly departure would be costly.
- French Polynesia uses the CFP franc (XPF). Cards work at hotels, resorts and most shops, but carry some cash for the market, roulottes and small vendors.
- Tipping isn’t customary in French Polynesia, though it’s appreciated for excellent service. Check your cruise line’s policy for gratuities on board.
- Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard and insect repellent. The tropical sun is intense, and mosquitoes can carry dengue.
- Expect Sunday to be quiet in Papeete. The market is lively early on Sunday mornings, but many shops close for the day.
