About Saguenay

The Saguenay River carves a deep, steep-walled fjord through the Canadian Shield from Lac Saint-Jean to the St. Lawrence at Tadoussac. Ships sail roughly 60 miles up it, past forested cliffs, tiny villages and Cap Trinité, where a statue of the Virgin Mary has watched over sailors since the 1880s. Beluga whales live in the lower fjord and the nearby St. Lawrence estuary.

At La Baie, the city’s borough on the Baie des Ha! Ha!, volunteers greet passengers, often in costume, and local producers and artisans often sell their goods near the terminal. Popular outings include the Musée du Fjord, a historic pulp mill museum in Chicoutimi, the little white house that survived the 1996 flood, and hikes or boat trips in the national park. Many visitors also simply enjoy the fjord from the ship’s deck.

Saguenay suits nature lovers, francophiles and anyone seeking a quieter, authentic stop. The city itself isn’t a major sightseeing hub, English is less widely spoken than in Montreal, and attractions are spread out, so a tour helps.

Where cruise ships dock in Saguenay

Ships dock at the cruise terminal in La Baie, part of the city of Saguenay, at the head of the Baie des Ha! Ha! on the Saguenay Fjord. The terminal area, a waterfront park and the Musée du Fjord are within walking distance. Chicoutimi, the city’s main downtown, is about 20 to 25 minutes away by road, and parts of Saguenay Fjord National Park are around an hour. Taxis are limited, so tours or ship shuttles are the easiest options. Plan to be on deck for the scenic sail along the fjord in and out.

Best things to do in Saguenay on a cruise

  1. 1

    Sailing the Saguenay Fjord

    scenery

The cruise up and down the fjord is a highlight in itself, with granite cliffs rising hundreds of feet from dark water. Watch for Cap Trinité and its tall statue of Notre-Dame-du-Saguenay, and look for beluga whales near the fjord’s mouth at Tadoussac.

  2. 2

    Musée du Fjord

    family

Close to the La Baie terminal, this museum explores the fjord’s natural and human history, with an aquarium of marine life from the fjord and the St. Lawrence, including exhibits on the region’s unusual layers of fresh and salt water.

  3. 3

    Pulperie de Chicoutimi

    history

A former pulp mill complex beside a waterfall in Chicoutimi, now a regional museum covering the industry that built the area. It also preserves the house of folk painter Arthur Villeneuve, who covered the interior walls with his colorful paintings.

  4. 4

    Petite Maison Blanche

    history

During the devastating 1996 Saguenay flood, this small white house in Chicoutimi stood firm while torrents poured around it, becoming a symbol of resilience. It’s now a small museum and a popular photo stop.

  5. 5

    Saguenay Fjord National Park

    nature

The park protects long stretches of the fjord’s shore, with hiking trails, sea kayaking and viewpoints over the cliffs. Some tours visit Baie-Éternité, where trails climb toward Cap Trinité. Check times carefully, as distances along the fjord are significant.

  6. 6

    Local market and blueberry treats

    food

The Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region is famous for wild blueberries, so much so that locals are nicknamed Bleuets. Look for blueberry pies, jams and chocolate-covered blueberries made by Trappist monks, along with local cheeses and microbrews.
