About Uniworld
Uniworld has been running river cruises since 1976, making it one of the longest-established river lines serving North Americans, and it marked its 50th anniversary in 2026. In 2004 it joined The Travel Corporation, the family-owned travel company of the Tollman family, which also owns Red Carnation Hotels, and Uniworld’s ships borrow that hotel group’s lavish, individual style.
Uniworld calls its vessels Super Ships, and each one has a distinct personality. S.S. Maria Theresa evokes imperial Vienna, S.S. Joie de Vivre channels Parisian glamour on the Seine, S.S. Sphinx sails the Nile, S.S. São Gabriel cruises the Douro, and La Venezia sails the Venetian lagoon and Po River. Ships carry roughly 120 to 160 guests, and newer ships, such as S.S. Emilie on the Danube, continue the tradition.
Itineraries cover the Danube, Rhine, Main and Moselle, the Seine, the Rhône, Bordeaux’s rivers, the Douro, Venice and the Po, the Nile, the Mekong and the Ganges, often paired with hotel stays in major cities.
Style, atmosphere and who sails
Uniworld is elegant, indulgent and warm. Guests are mostly affluent North Americans in their 50s to 70s, often celebrating special trips, with families on Generations sailings in summer and holidays. Dress is casual by day and smart casual to elegant at dinner, with a welcome and farewell dinner where many guests dress up. The decor is the defining feature: hand-picked antiques, rich fabrics, custom artwork and chandeliers, so each ship feels like a boutique hotel. Service is attentive, and because almost everything is included, there’s little signing of bills. Some travelers find the decor over the top; those who prefer minimal Scandinavian style may prefer Viking.

Uniworld dining
The main restaurant serves regional and farm-to-table dishes with menus that reflect the river you’re sailing, and many ships have an additional specialty venue or bistro, all included. Unlimited beverages accompany meals, including fine wines selected for each region. Dietary needs and vegetarian options are well catered for.
Uniworld entertainment and activities
Evenings feature local musicians and performers, lectures on history and culture, wine tastings and a pianist in the lounge. Wellness programs, including fitness classes and guided Go Active excursions such as bike rides and hikes, are included. Overnight stays in cities such as Paris, Vienna and Budapest allow evenings ashore.
Uniworld kids and families
Uniworld’s Generations sailings welcome families with children on select departures, adding kid-friendly excursions and activities. Regular sailings carry few children.
Uniworld cabins and suites
Staterooms are lavishly decorated with high-end beds, fine linens and marble bathrooms. Many have French balconies, and suites add space, butler service and premium amenities. As on all river ships, standard cabins are smaller than on ocean ships, but they make up for it in style.

Uniworld tipping and gratuities
All onboard gratuities, and gratuities for local guides on included excursions, are included in Uniworld fares, so there are no tips to budget for.
