Aruba cruise port guide

Aruba is a dry, sunny Dutch Caribbean island outside the main hurricane belt, and ships dock right in downtown Oranjestad. It’s one of the best beach ports in the Caribbean: Eagle Beach and Palm Beach are 10 to 20 minutes away by taxi or bus. Off-road tours of Arikok National Park, shipwreck snorkeling and Dutch-Caribbean food fill out the day.

About Aruba

Aruba looks unlike the lush volcanic islands to the north. The landscape is desert-like, with cacti, divi-divi trees bent by the trade winds and rugged limestone coastline on the windward side, while the sheltered southwest shore is lined with long, powdery white beaches and calm turquoise water. The constant breeze keeps the heat comfortable, and rain is rare.

Oranjestad, the capital, is a tidy, colorful town of Dutch-style gabled buildings, shopping malls and casinos right at the cruise terminal. Aruba suits beach lovers, families and first-time cruisers who want an easy, safe-feeling port with lots of options. If you crave rainforest, waterfalls or dramatic mountains, this flat, arid island isn’t that kind of place.

Where cruise ships dock in Aruba

Ships dock at the cruise terminal on the Oranjestad waterfront, right downtown. You can walk off the ship into shops, cafés and the main streets in minutes. Taxis wait outside with fixed fares to the main beaches, and the main public bus station is a short walk from the terminal, with frequent, inexpensive buses running up the hotel strip to Eagle Beach and Palm Beach. Eagle Beach is about 10 minutes by taxi, Palm Beach about 15 to 20, and Arikok National Park around 30. Ships often stay late in Aruba, sometimes into the evening.

Best things to do in Aruba on a cruise

  1. 1

    Eagle Beach

    beach

A broad, uncrowded stretch of soft white sand, often ranked among the world’s best beaches, with the much-photographed fofoti trees leaning toward the water. There are low-rise hotels and some shade huts and loungers for rent. It’s about 10 minutes from the terminal and calm for swimming most days.

  2. 2

    Palm Beach

    beach

The lively heart of Aruba’s high-rise hotel strip, with calm water, beach bars, restaurants and every water sport you can think of, from parasailing to jet skis. Snorkel and sunset sailing trips leave from the piers here. It’s about 15 to 20 minutes from the cruise terminal.

  3. 3

Arikok National Park and the Natural Pool

    nature

Arikok covers much of the island’s rugged interior and windward coast. Highlights include the Natural Pool, a rock-ringed swimming hole reached by 4x4, UTV or a demanding hike, and caves with ancient Arawak drawings. Jeep tours are bumpy, dusty and a lot of fun. A park entry fee applies.

  4. 4

    Antilla shipwreck

    adventure

A German freighter scuttled during World War II, the Antilla is one of the largest shipwrecks in the Caribbean and lies in fairly shallow water off the northwest coast. The upper parts of the hull are close enough to the surface for snorkelers to see clearly. Catamaran trips often combine it with reef stops.

  5. 5

California Lighthouse and the north coast

    scenery

A stone lighthouse at Aruba’s northern tip, with views over sand dunes and the wild coastline. Nearby, the small Alto Vista Chapel sits on a windswept hill. Both are common stops on island tours, about 25 minutes from Oranjestad.

  6. 6

    Baby Beach and San Nicolas

    beach

At the island’s southern end, Baby Beach is a shallow, sheltered lagoon perfect for kids and beginner snorkelers. On the way, the town of San Nicolas is covered in large, colorful street murals. It’s about 30 to 40 minutes from the port.

  7. 7

    Mangel Halto

    wildlife

A quiet cove on the south coast with mangroves and a reef close to shore, popular with snorkelers and divers. There are few facilities, so bring water and your own gear. Watch for currents beyond the reef.

What to eat and drink in Aruba

Try keshi yená, a baked cheese dish stuffed with spiced chicken or beef, pastechi (fried pastries filled with cheese, meat or fish), funchi (cornmeal) and pan bati, a slightly sweet pancake bread. Fresh wahoo, mahi and red snapper are local favorites. At Zeerovers in Savaneta, fishermen fry the day’s catch for locals and visitors alike. Wash it down with Balashi, Aruba’s own beer, or an Aruba Ariba cocktail.

Tips for your port day

  • Public buses are a cheap, easy way to reach Eagle and Palm beaches; ask at the terminal or bus station about return times.
  • The sun is fierce and the breeze hides it; reapply sunscreen often and wear a hat.
  • Natural Pool tours are rough and bumpy; skip them if you have back problems or are pregnant.
  • U.S. dollars are accepted everywhere, but change may come in florins; carry small bills.
  • If your ship stays late, consider a sunset sail or dinner on the beach before returning.

Aruba cruise FAQs

Can you walk from the Aruba cruise port to the beach?

Not to the best beaches. Downtown Oranjestad is right at the terminal, but Eagle Beach is about 10 minutes by taxi and Palm Beach 15 to 20. Inexpensive public buses also run there.

What is the best beach in Aruba for cruise passengers?

Eagle Beach is the top pick for space and soft sand. Palm Beach is livelier, with water sports and beach bars, and Baby Beach is ideal for kids.

Is Aruba safe for cruise visitors?

Yes. Aruba is considered one of the safest islands in the Caribbean. Take normal precautions with valuables on beaches and in town.

Does Aruba get hurricanes?

Rarely. Aruba lies south of the main hurricane belt, so cruise calls are seldom disrupted by storms, which makes it a popular port in hurricane season.

Do I need Aruban florins for a cruise stop?

No. U.S. dollars are accepted everywhere in Aruba, and cards work at most businesses. Change is sometimes given in florins.
