About Grenada

St. George’s curls around a horseshoe-shaped harbor called the Carenage, with red-tiled roofs and pastel buildings climbing the hillsides to old forts. Beyond town, Grenada is a rugged island of rainforest, crater lakes and small farms growing nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and cocoa; there’s even a nutmeg on the national flag. It feels friendly and authentic, with tourism woven into everyday island life rather than dominating it.

This port works for almost everyone: beach lovers head straight for Grand Anse, while foodies, hikers and history fans can fill a day with spice estates, waterfalls and forts. It’s less suited to anyone after big-brand shopping or nightlife. Hills are steep, so walking around St. George’s takes some effort in the heat.

Where cruise ships dock in Grenada

Ships dock at the Melville Street cruise terminal on the edge of downtown St. George’s. You can walk into town and around the Carenage in a few minutes, though the streets are steep. Taxis and water taxis wait near the terminal; Grand Anse Beach is about 10 to 15 minutes by road, or a pleasant water-taxi ride across the bay. Grand Etang National Park and Annandale Falls are 20 to 40 minutes inland. St. George’s takes two hours on foot; an island tour takes three to four.

Best things to do in Grenada on a cruise

  1. 1

    Grand Anse Beach

    beach

Grenada’s best-known beach, about 2 miles (3 km) of soft white sand on a calm bay with views back to St. George’s. Hotels, beach bars and vendors line the shore, and loungers and water sports are available. It’s close enough to the port for a relaxed half or full day.

  2. 2

    Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park

    wildlife

Off the west coast, sculptures by Jason deCaires Taylor and other artists, including a circle of children holding hands, have become an artificial reef colonized by coral and fish. Snorkelers can see many from the surface on glass-bottom boat or snorkel trips that leave from near St. George’s and Grand Anse.

  3. 3

    Fort George and the Carenage

    history

Walk around the Carenage harbor, past fishing boats and waterfront restaurants, then climb to Fort George, an 18th-century French-built fort above the harbor entrance with views over town. Nearby, the Grenada National Museum covers island history. The hills are steep, so take it slow.

  4. 4

    Grand Etang National Park

    nature

A rainforest reserve in the mountainous interior, centered on a lake in an extinct volcanic crater. Short trails lead through the forest, and you may see Mona monkeys near the visitor area. It’s often combined with nearby Annandale Falls or the Seven Sisters waterfalls on tours.

  5. 5

    Spice and chocolate estates

    food

Belmont Estate, a 17th-century plantation in the north, offers tours of its cocoa operation and gardens, plus chocolate tastings and a restaurant serving local food. Other tours visit the Gouyave nutmeg processing station, where workers sort and grade the island’s famous spice by hand.

  6. 6

    Annandale Falls

    nature

A small, pretty waterfall surrounded by tropical plants, a short drive from St. George’s. Local divers sometimes leap from the top for tips. It’s easy to reach and good for a quick swim, though it can be crowded on cruise days.

  7. 7

    River Antoine Rum Distillery

    history

In the island’s northeast, this distillery still crushes cane with a water wheel and makes rum largely by traditional methods, as it has since the 1700s. Its strong rum is famous among visitors. It’s about an hour from St. George’s, so it suits a full-day island tour.

What to eat and drink in Grenada

Grenada’s national dish is oil down, a one-pot stew of breadfruit, salted meat, dumplings and callaloo slow-cooked in coconut milk with turmeric. Look for lambi (conch), rotis and fresh fish, and don’t leave without nutmeg ice cream. Rum punch here comes with freshly grated nutmeg on top. Grenadian chocolate, cocoa tea, Carib beer and rums from Clarke’s Court and Westerhall make great souvenirs. Spice baskets are sold everywhere.

Tips for your port day

  • Buy spices from the market or reputable shops near the Carenage; vendors at the port charge more.
  • The water taxi to Grand Anse is quick, scenic and often cheaper than a road taxi; agree on the return pickup time.
  • St. George’s is hilly, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water if you plan to walk to the forts.
  • If you visit River Antoine, sample carefully; the rum is very high-proof.
