About Bonaire

Bonaire is the B in the ABC islands, but it’s much more low-key than Aruba or Curaçao. There are no high-rise resorts or cruise-scale shopping districts, just a sleepy waterfront town, cactus-studded scrubland, pink salt flats and reefs that start just a few steps from the shore. Even the license plates advertise the island as a diver’s paradise.

If you snorkel or dive, Bonaire may be the highlight of your cruise; the water is calm and clear on the leeward coast, and the marine life is abundant. Nature lovers will enjoy the flamingos and the wild north. Visitors who want big beaches with loungers and lively beach bars may find the island too quiet, since much of the coastline is rocky.

Where cruise ships dock in Bonaire

Ships dock at the cruise piers right on the Kralendijk waterfront, so you walk straight into town. The center, with cafés, small shops and the old Fort Oranje, takes an hour or so to explore. Taxis wait near the pier, and rental cars, scooters and golf carts are available. Water taxis to Klein Bonaire leave from the waterfront area and take about 15 minutes. The salt pans and flamingo areas are 20 to 30 minutes south, and Washington Slagbaai National Park about 45 minutes north. Many dive shops in town meet cruise visitors near the pier.

Best things to do in Bonaire on a cruise

  1. 1

Shore snorkeling in Bonaire National Marine Park

    wildlife

The entire coastline is a marine park, and dozens of yellow-painted stones mark entry points along the roads. Sites like 1000 Steps, which actually has fewer steps, and Andrea I and II have healthy reefs within a short swim. Everyone who snorkels or dives must pay the marine park nature fee, which can be paid online in advance.

  2. 2

    Klein Bonaire

    beach

An uninhabited islet just offshore, with No Name Beach’s white sand and excellent snorkeling right off the shore. There’s no shade or facilities, so bring water, snacks and sun protection. Water taxis make the short crossing from Kralendijk throughout the day.

  3. 3

    Salt pans and flamingos

    nature

Bonaire’s south is a striking landscape of pink salt ponds, white salt pyramids and historic stone huts once used by enslaved salt workers. Flamingos feed in the shallow ponds, and the Pekelmeer area is one of the Caribbean’s largest flamingo breeding grounds. Keep a respectful distance.

  4. 4

    Washington Slagbaai National Park

    nature

A rugged park covering the island’s northwest, with cactus forests, dramatic coastline, lagoons with flamingos and quiet beaches. The dirt roads are rough, so most visitors go with a guided 4x4 tour. Allow at least half a day.

  5. 5

    Lac Bay

    adventure

A shallow, wind-swept bay on the east coast that’s one of the Caribbean’s best spots for windsurfing, with beginners’ lessons available. Mangrove kayaking and snorkeling tours explore the edges of the bay. Sorobon Beach has a beach bar and loungers.

  6. 6

    Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire

    family

A sanctuary caring for hundreds of donkeys descended from animals brought by Spanish colonists. You drive slowly through the grounds while donkeys wander up to your vehicle. It’s a fun, easy stop for families, about 15 minutes from town.

  7. 7

    Rincon

    culture

Bonaire’s oldest village sits in a valley in the island’s north, with colorful houses and a slower pace. Stop at the Cadushy distillery to taste its cactus liqueur. It’s about 25 minutes from Kralendijk and often combined with the park or flamingo viewing.

What to eat and drink in Bonaire

Local cooking includes goat stew (kabritu stobá), fish stew, funchi (cornmeal) and the Dutch-Caribbean favorite keshi yená. Fresh-caught wahoo, mahi and snapper are on most menus, and waterfront restaurants in Kralendijk serve seafood with a view. Try Cadushy, a liqueur made from local cactus, and look for local cafés serving pastechi for a quick snack.

Tips for your port day

  • Pay the marine park nature fee before you snorkel or dive anywhere; it’s required for everyone using the water.
  • Bring your own snorkel gear and reef shoes; many entry points are rocky, and gear rentals are limited near the pier.
  • Don’t leave valuables in rental cars at snorkel sites; locals often leave windows down so thieves don’t break them.
  • Sun protection is crucial, especially on Klein Bonaire, where there’s no shade at all.
  • Many shops and attractions close earlier than on bigger islands, so plan your shopping for the morning.
