Chania cruise port guide
Cruise ships calling at Chania dock at Souda Bay, a deep natural harbor about 4 miles (7 km) east of the city, with buses and taxis covering the 15- to 20-minute ride. The reward is Chania’s Venetian harbor and old town, arguably the most beautiful in Crete, with a lighthouse, a domed Ottoman mosque and lanes of pastel townhouses.

About Chania
Chania wears its history on its waterfront. A crescent of Venetian and Ottoman buildings in faded ochre and rose curves around the old harbor, a stone lighthouse stands at the end of a long breakwater, and the pink domes of the Mosque of the Janissaries sit right on the quay. Behind them, the old town’s Topanas and Splantzia quarters are a tangle of lanes, courtyards and bougainvillea.
Most cruisers head straight into town, walk the harbor and breakwater, browse the leather shops on Skridlof Street and settle into a long Cretan lunch. Those with more time drive out onto the Akrotiri peninsula for its monasteries, beaches and views, or pay their respects at the war cemetery right beside the port.
Chania is ideal for strollers, photographers and food lovers who want a relaxed day. It’s not a big-sights port like Heraklion, and the famous beaches you’ll see on postcards, Balos and Elafonisi, are too far for a typical cruise stop.
Where cruise ships dock in Chania
Ships dock at the port of Souda, inside a sheltered bay that also hosts a naval base, so photography restrictions may apply near military areas. Chania’s old town is about 4 miles (7 km) west, roughly 15 to 20 minutes by road. Ships often run a shuttle, public buses connect Souda with Chania’s main bus station, and taxis wait at the terminal. From the bus station, the old harbor is a 10-minute walk downhill. Allow three to four hours to enjoy the old town without rushing.
Best things to do in Chania on a cruise
- 1
Venetian Harbor and lighthouse
scenery
The heart of Chania is its curving old port. Walk the long breakwater out to the lighthouse, rebuilt in the 1800s on Venetian foundations, for the classic view back over the town with the White Mountains behind. Morning is quieter and the light is softer.
- 2
Mosque of the Janissaries
history
Built soon after the Ottoman conquest in the 1600s, this multidomed mosque is the oldest Ottoman building on Crete and one of the harbor’s signature landmarks. It now hosts exhibitions, so you can sometimes step inside.
- 3
Topanas and Splantzia quarters
culture
West of the harbor, Topanas has the grandest Venetian mansions and the old Jewish quarter, including the restored Etz Hayyim Synagogue. East of the harbor, Splantzia is calmer and more local, with a shady plane-tree square and small cafés. Get a little lost in both.
- 4
Souda Bay War Cemetery
history
A short walk or taxi ride from the cruise terminal, this beautifully kept Commonwealth cemetery holds the graves of soldiers who died in the 1941 Battle of Crete, many from Britain, Australia and New Zealand. Its rows face the calm water of the bay, a quiet, moving stop.
- 5
Akrotiri peninsula and Agia Triada Monastery
culture
The peninsula between Souda and Chania holds the graves of statesman Eleftherios Venizelos, with a panoramic view over the city, and the 17th-century Agia Triada Monastery, whose monks produce olive oil and wine. Taxis or a ship tour make it easy to combine with the old town.
- 6
Beaches at Marathi and Stavros
beach
Marathi, a small sandy cove with fish tavernas, sits on the Akrotiri side of Souda Bay, close to the port. Stavros, at the northern tip of the peninsula, has a shallow lagoon beneath a mountain known from the film Zorba the Greek. Both are a taxi ride away and calm on most days.

What to eat and drink in Chania
Chania has its own specialties. Look for boureki, a baked layering of zucchini, potato and soft cheese; Sfakian pies, thin cheese-filled pancakes drizzled with honey; and staka, a rich, buttery sauce served with eggs or fries. Local graviera cheese, Cretan olive oil and wild-herb tea make good souvenirs. Lunch on the harbor is all about the view; lanes behind the waterfront often serve more authentic food.
Tips for your port day
- Take the shuttle or bus into Chania rather than lingering at Souda. The port area has little to see beyond the war cemetery.
- Leather goods on Skridlof Street are a local craft; browse several shops before buying and compare quality.
- Restaurant staff on the harbor will invite you in. Walk a few lanes back for calmer, often better meals.
- Allow at least 30 minutes for the ride back to Souda, plus waiting time for buses or taxis on busy days.
- Don’t try for Balos or Elafonisi unless your ship offers a dedicated excursion. Both are long drives each way.
