About Corfu
Corfu looks and feels unlike the Aegean islands. Instead of white cubes and bare rock, you get cypress and olive groves, tall Venetian townhouses in shades of ochre and rose, and a town square where cricket is still played on the grass. Four centuries of Venetian rule, followed by French and British control, left layers you can read in the architecture, the food and even the street names.
A port day usually starts in Corfu Town: through the Old Fortress, across the Spianada, the largest square in Greece, past the Liston’s French-built arcades and into the alleys around the church of St. Spyridon. In the afternoon, many cruisers take a short drive south to the Achilleion or west to the coast at Paleokastritsa.
Corfu rewards walkers, history fans and anyone who likes café culture. Beach lovers can find good coves, but they’re a drive away. Summer brings heat and several ships at once, and the Old Town’s narrow lanes, called kantounia, can feel crowded around midday.
Where cruise ships dock in Corfu
Cruise ships berth at the New Port on the western side of Corfu Town, about 1.5 miles (2.5 km) from the Old Town. A shuttle bus usually runs from the cruise terminal to the edge of the Old Town, or you can walk in 30 to 40 minutes along the waterfront past the New Fortress. Taxis wait outside the terminal for trips to the Achilleion or Paleokastritsa. The Old Town needs three to four hours; adding an island drive fills the day.
Best things to do in Corfu on a cruise
- 1
Old Fortress
history
Built by the Venetians on a rocky headland and cut off from town by a sea moat, the Old Fortress has ramparts, tunnels, a Doric-style British garrison church and a climb to a lighthouse with sweeping views over the town and the mainland mountains. Allow an hour and wear sturdy shoes.
- 2
Spianada and the Liston
culture
The Spianada is Corfu Town’s great open square, with a cricket pitch, bandstand and gardens. Along its western edge, the Liston is an elegant arcade built during French rule, lined with cafés. Order a coffee or a kumquat liqueur and watch the town go by.
- 3
Church of St. Spyridon
culture
Corfu’s red-domed bell tower is the tallest in town and marks the church of the island’s patron saint, whose relics rest in a silver casket inside. Locals credit him with saving the island from plague and siege. Dress modestly and keep voices low.
- 4
Achilleion Palace
history
About 6 miles (10 km) south of town, this neoclassical palace was built for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, better known as Sisi, and later owned by Kaiser Wilhelm II. Its terraced gardens of statues, including a giant Achilles, look out over the sea.
- 5
Kanoni and Mouse Island
scenery
From the Kanoni viewpoint, a short taxi ride south of town, you look down on the tiny white Vlacherna Monastery on a causeway and the wooded islet of Pontikonisi, or Mouse Island, behind it. Planes landing at the airport pass low overhead, which plane spotters love.
- 6
Paleokastritsa
beach
On the west coast, about 45 minutes by road, Paleokastritsa is a cluster of coves with clear, cool water below a hilltop monastery. Small boats take visitors into sea caves along the cliffs. It’s the best beach-and-scenery combination within reach of a port day.

What to eat and drink in Corfu
Corfu’s cooking has a Venetian accent. Try pastitsada, beef or rooster slow-cooked in a cinnamon-spiced tomato sauce and served over pasta; sofrito, veal in a garlic, parsley and white-wine sauce; and bourdeto, a peppery fish stew. Kumquats grow here, so you’ll see kumquat liqueur and sweets everywhere, and tsitsibira, a local ginger beer, is a holdover from British rule.
Tips for your port day
- Use the port shuttle if one runs. The walk into town is pleasant but long in the heat, and you’ll save your legs for the Old Town’s stairs.
- Climb the Old Fortress early, when it’s cooler and the light over the town is best.
- The Achilleion and Kanoni sit close together south of town, so pairing them in one taxi trip is efficient.
- Corfu’s alleys are a maze. Use the red bell tower of St. Spyridon as your landmark if you lose your bearings.
- If you want a beach, decide early. The good ones are 30 minutes or more away, so time it carefully against all-aboard.
