About Heraklion, Crete

Heraklion is a working city first and a tourist town second, which is part of its appeal. Beyond the Venetian harbor and the squat Koules fortress, you’ll find busy shopping streets, market stalls piled with herbs and cheese, and café terraces full of locals arguing over coffee. The city’s real treasure, though, is what came 3,500 years before the Venetians: the Minoan civilization, Europe’s earliest advanced culture.

The classic port day is Knossos in the morning, before the heat and coaches peak, and the archaeological museum in the afternoon, where you see the original frescoes, the Snake Goddess figurines and the mysterious Phaistos Disc. With time left over, wander the Venetian walls or graze along the 1866 market street.

History lovers will find Heraklion one of the most rewarding stops in the Mediterranean. If you’re after a pretty Greek island village or a beach day, it may disappoint: the city is functional rather than picturesque, and the best Cretan scenery is further afield.

Where cruise ships dock in Heraklion, Crete

Ships dock in Heraklion’s commercial harbor, just east of the old Venetian port. A shuttle often runs to the port gate, and from there the city center and Lions Square are a 15- to 20-minute walk uphill. Knossos is about 20 minutes away by taxi or the frequent city bus, which leaves from near the port and the center. Knossos takes about two hours with a guide, and the museum another one and a half to two hours.

Best things to do in Heraklion, Crete on a cruise

  1. 1

    Palace of Knossos

    history

The largest Minoan palace sprawls over a hillside of courtyards, storerooms, staircases and royal apartments, linked in legend to King Minos and the labyrinth of the Minotaur. Archaeologist Arthur Evans controversially rebuilt parts of it in concrete in the early 1900s, including the red, downward-tapering columns. A licensed guide brings it to life.

  2. 2

    Heraklion Archaeological Museum

    history

Home to the world’s greatest collection of Minoan art: the bull-leaping fresco, the Prince of the Lilies, faience Snake Goddess figurines and the stamped clay Phaistos Disc, still undeciphered. Visit after Knossos and the palace makes far more sense.

  3. 3

    Koules Fortress

    history

The Venetians built this sea fortress at the mouth of the old harbor in the 1500s, and the winged lion of St. Mark still marks its walls. Inside are vaulted chambers, and from the roof you get views over the harbor and your ship. The walk along the breakwater to reach it is pleasant in itself.

  4. 4

Lions Square and the 1866 Street market

    food

The Morosini Fountain, guarded by four stone lions, anchors Heraklion’s favorite meeting place. Nearby, 1866 Street is a lively market lane selling Cretan honey, olive oil, mountain herbs, cheeses and raki. Grab a bougatsa pastry at one of the square’s cafés.

  5. 5

    Venetian walls and Kazantzakis’s tomb

    history

Heraklion’s massive 15th- to 17th-century walls held out through a 21-year Ottoman siege. On the Martinengo Bastion lies the simple grave of Nikos Kazantzakis, author of Zorba the Greek, inscribed with his famous line about hoping for nothing, fearing nothing and being free.

  6. 6

Wine villages of Archanes and Peza

    food

Just south of Knossos, the hills around Archanes and Peza are among Crete’s main wine regions. Several wineries offer tastings of local grapes such as Vidiano and Kotsifali, and a tour pairs easily with a morning at Knossos.

What to eat and drink in Heraklion, Crete

Crete has its own cuisine. Try dakos, a barley rusk topped with grated tomato, soft mizithra cheese and olive oil; kalitsounia, small cheese pies; and slow-cooked lamb with wild greens. Heraklion is known for bougatsa, a flaky pastry filled with sweet or salty cheese. Meals often end with a free shot of raki, also called tsikoudia, a strong grape spirit.

Tips for your port day

  • Go to Knossos first thing. It opens early, has little shade and fills with coach groups by late morning.
  • Hire a licensed guide at the Knossos entrance or book a ship tour with one. Without explanation, much of the site looks like rubble.
  • Combine Knossos and the museum on a single ticket if one is offered when you visit; it saves time in lines.
  • The city bus to Knossos is frequent and inexpensive, making this an easy port to do independently.
  • Mondays and public holidays can bring shorter hours at Greek sites. Check current opening times before you set out.
