About Gothenburg
Founded in the 1600s with the help of Dutch planners, Gothenburg still has canals and a grid of handsome streets, but its spirit is casual and outdoorsy. Locals spend summer days island-hopping in the archipelago and evenings eating shrimp and drinking craft beer. The city is easy to get around on its extensive tram network.
On a port day you can walk the Haga district for oversized cinnamon buns, ride a low canal boat, eat at the Fish Church market and still have time for Liseberg or the archipelago. It suits families, food lovers and anyone who enjoys a city without too many must-do sights. Visitors expecting grand palaces will find Stockholm more imposing.
Where cruise ships dock in Gothenburg
Gothenburg has several cruise berths along the Göta River. Smaller and mid-size ships use the America Cruise Terminal (Amerikaskjulet) on the south bank, about a 20-minute walk or a short tram ride from the center. Larger ships may berth farther out, at Arendal or Frihamnen, where shuttles are provided. Once in the center, trams reach almost everywhere, and the canal-side old town, Haga and the Avenyn boulevard are walkable. Archipelago ferries leave from Saltholmen, about 30 minutes by tram.
Best things to do in Gothenburg on a cruise
- 1
Paddan canal boat tour
scenery
Flat, open boats glide through Gothenburg’s 17th-century canals and out into the harbor, ducking under some very low bridges (everyone has to bend). Tours last about 50 minutes, depart from near the Kungsportsplatsen square and give a fun overview of the city.
- 2
Haga district
culture
Gothenburg’s oldest suburb is a pedestrian street of wooden and brick houses filled with cafés, vintage shops and bakeries. Order a Hagabullen, the huge cinnamon bun Haga is known for. Climb up to the Skansen Kronan fortress on the hill for a view over the rooftops.
- 3
Feskekôrka (the Fish Church)
food
Gothenburg’s fish market looks like a neo-Gothic church but is filled with stalls selling shrimp, crayfish, smoked salmon and oysters. Several counters serve lunch, from shrimp sandwiches to full seafood platters. It sits on a canal just south of the center.
- 4
Liseberg
family
Scandinavia’s largest amusement park mixes classic gardens with serious roller coasters, including the wooden Balder and the towering Helix. It’s about 15 minutes by tram from the center. Opening days vary through the season, so check before you go.
- 5
Southern archipelago
nature
Take the tram to Saltholmen, then a public ferry to car-free islands like Brännö, Styrsö or Vrångö, with granite outcrops, swimming spots and small cafés. Ferries are part of the city transit system. Watch the return schedule closely, as ferries can be infrequent outside peak hours.
- 6
Götaplatsen and the Gothenburg Museum of Art
culture
At the top of the Avenyn boulevard, Carl Milles’ bronze Poseidon statue faces the Gothenburg Museum of Art, known for Nordic paintings by artists such as Carl Larsson and Edvard Munch. Universeum, a science center with a rainforest, is a short walk away for families.

What to eat and drink in Gothenburg
Gothenburg is Sweden’s seafood capital. Order a räksmörgås, an open sandwich piled high with hand-peeled shrimp, egg and mayonnaise, or try oysters and langoustines from the west coast. Fika at a Haga café with a cinnamon or cardamom bun is essential. The Stora Saluhallen indoor market and Feskekôrka are good lunch spots, and the city has an excellent craft beer scene.
Tips for your port day
- Use the tram. Tap a card or use the transit app; trams run frequently across the city.
- Sweden is nearly cashless, so you won’t need krona.
- If you go to the archipelago, check ferry times back before you set off; missing one can cost an hour.
- Book Liseberg tickets online and check opening days; the park doesn’t open every day in shoulder seasons.
- West coast weather can switch from sun to showers quickly. Pack a light rain jacket.
