Saga Cruises

Saga Cruises is a British boutique line exclusively for travelers aged 50 and over (companions 40 and over), sailing two modern, all-balcony ships of under 1,000 guests from UK ports. Its package is unusually inclusive for UK residents, covering drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi, excursions and even a chauffeur to the port. It is built and sold for British travelers, so most North Americans will find it hard to arrange and less tailored to them.

About Saga

Saga is a British company founded in the 1950s that specializes in holidays, insurance and services for people over 50. It has run its own cruise ships for decades, and in 2019 and 2021 replaced its older vessels with two purpose-built ships designed entirely around the needs and tastes of its older British customers.

The fleet is two sister ships, Spirit of Discovery and Spirit of Adventure, each carrying fewer than 1,000 guests. Every cabin has a balcony, and a large share are single cabins, reflecting Saga’s many solo guests. Interiors are elegant and British-styled, with features designed for older travelers, such as accessible bathrooms and good handrails. Saga also sells river cruises in Europe.

Most voyages are no-fly round trips from Dover or Portsmouth to Norway, the Baltic, the British Isles, Iceland, the Canary Islands, Spain and Portugal and the Mediterranean, plus longer winter voyages.

Style, atmosphere and who sails

Saga is refined, calm and very British. Every guest is at least 50 (traveling companions at least 40), and many are retired, well-traveled and loyal repeat cruisers, including a large number of solo travelers. Ships are small enough to feel intimate, with attentive service and a generous crew ratio. Evenings include several formal or black-tie nights per cruise alongside smart-casual nights. Entertainment, menus and humor are tailored to British tastes, and the onboard currency is pounds sterling. Saga’s package is designed for UK residents, starting with a chauffeur pickup from home, so for travelers based in North America much of its value doesn’t translate.

Is Saga right for you?

  • Guests who want drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi and excursions included
  • Travelers who appreciate formal nights and traditional service

Less ideal for

  • Anyone under 50, unless traveling with someone who qualifies
  • North Americans, since the package and marketing are built for UK residents
  • Families or travelers wanting lively entertainment and big-ship amenities

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Exceptionally inclusive fares: drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi, excursions and a chauffeur to the port
  • Modern, all-balcony ships with fewer than 1,000 guests
  • Many single cabins for solo travelers
  • Calm, adult atmosphere designed for travelers over 50
  • Attentive service and a high crew-to-guest ratio

Cons

  • Minimum age of 50 (40 for companions)

  • Formal nights and quiet evenings won’t suit everyone
  • Small fleet means limited itinerary choice

Saga dining

Dining includes a main restaurant, a buffet-style venue and specialty restaurants with no supplement, such as an Asian-inspired restaurant and a steakhouse-style grill. Menus favor British and European classics, and afternoon tea is served daily. Room service is available, and dietary needs are handled carefully.

Saga entertainment and activities

Entertainment is polished and traditional: West End-style shows in the theater, guest performers, classical recitals, ballroom dancing and talks by specialist speakers on history, nature and current affairs. Quizzes, card games, crafts and the library are popular, and evenings are calm.

Saga cabins and suites

Every cabin has a balcony, from standard balcony cabins to suites, and a large number of single balcony cabins are available for solo guests. Cabins are generously sized for the ship class, with walk-in showers and features designed for comfort and accessibility.

Saga drinks and packages

Drinks are included in the fare, covering wines, beers, spirits, cocktails and soft drinks, with only some premium wines and spirits charged extra. Bar prices for extras are in pounds sterling.

Saga tipping and gratuities

Gratuities are included in Saga fares, so no service charge is added and tipping isn’t expected.
