About Klaipėda

Klaipėda was the German city of Memel for centuries, and its compact Old Town still has half-timbered houses, a theater square and a castle mound. It’s pleasant and unhurried rather than grand, and a couple of hours is enough to see it.

The real draw is the Curonian Spit, a narrow peninsula of dunes, fishing villages and forest that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic. Most visitors head to Nida and the great Parnidis Dune, or to the Hill of Witches sculpture trail at Juodkrantė. It’s a nature day, ideal for walkers; if you prefer big-city sights, this will feel quiet.

Where cruise ships dock in Klaipėda

Ships tie up at the cruise terminal on the Danė River mouth, right beside the Old Town, which is a five-minute walk. A passenger ferry to Smiltynė, at the northern tip of the Curonian Spit, leaves from nearby and takes only a few minutes. From Smiltynė, buses and tours run to Juodkrantė and Nida; Nida is about 30 miles (50 km) and roughly an hour by road. The Old Town takes a couple of hours on foot. Palanga, the beach resort with the Amber Museum, is about 30 minutes north by car.

  3. 3

    Lithuanian Sea Museum

    family

Set in a 19th-century fortress at the tip of the spit near the Smiltynė ferry, the museum has an aquarium, seals and penguins, plus maritime exhibits. A dolphinarium is next door. It’s an easy outing for families without a long drive.

Walk the cobbled streets past half-timbered warehouses to Theater Square, where the Ännchen von Tharau statue, inspired by a folk song, stands before the theater. Visit the Castle Museum on the old castle site and the art galleries in historic buildings.
