Cruise line comparison
Celebrity vs Holland America: which should you choose?
Both are premium lines, but they feel a generation apart. Celebrity Cruises suits travelers who want contemporary design, inventive restaurants and a social, cocktail-hour energy on ships of about 3,000 guests. Holland America Line suits travelers who want a traditional, quieter cruise with live music on Music Walk, longer and more unusual itineraries, Alaska and Yukon cruisetours and an older, very experienced crowd. Fares are broadly similar; Holland America often wins on long voyages.

Our verdict
Celebrity is the better fit for travelers who want a modern premium cruise with buzz, design and inventive food. Holland America is the better fit for travelers who want a quieter, traditional experience, standout live music and longer, more unusual itineraries. Neither is a party ship; the choice is about whether you want contemporary or classic.
Celebrity and Holland America are the two premium brands most American cruisers compare when they want something nicer than the mega-ship lines without paying luxury prices. Both offer polished service, good dining and fare bundles that include drinks and Wi-Fi. Their personalities, though, couldn’t be more different.
Celebrity reinvented itself around modern design with its Edge series, where the cantilevered Magic Carpet doubles as a bar and a tender platform. Holland America, founded in 1873, leans on tradition: Dutch heritage, art and antiques in the public rooms, afternoon tea, and ships named with the familiar -dam suffix. Its newest Pinnacle-class ships carry about 2,650 guests and are built around music and food.

Celebrity vs Holland America: FAQs
Is Celebrity better than Holland America?
It depends on your taste. Celebrity has more modern ships, more inventive restaurants and a younger, livelier feel. Holland America is quieter and more traditional, with excellent live music, roomier older ships and longer, more unusual itineraries.
Which is better for Alaska, Celebrity or Holland America?
Holland America, if you want a land tour. HAL has sailed to Alaska for decades and runs cruisetours into Denali and Canada’s Yukon, including Dawson City. Celebrity offers excellent seven-night Alaska cruises from Seattle and Vancouver but fewer land options.
Is Holland America only for older people?
No, but it skews older. The typical guest is in their 60s or 70s, especially on longer voyages. Younger travelers who enjoy live music, good food and port-heavy itineraries often like it, particularly on the Pinnacle-class ships.
Do Celebrity and Holland America include drinks?
Only through their bundled fares. Celebrity’s All Included fare adds the Classic drinks package and basic Wi-Fi. Holland America’s Have It All fare adds a beverage package, Wi-Fi, a specialty dining night or more and a shore excursion credit.
