About Ålesund
In January 1904, a fire swept through Ålesund and left most of the town’s residents homeless. It was rebuilt within a few years in the Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) style of the time, with towers, curling ornaments and dragon motifs. The result is one of the most harmonious townscapes in Northern Europe, spread over islands linked by bridges.
Most visitors climb the 418 steps to the Aksla viewpoint, stroll the Art Nouveau streets and visit the aquarium or the open-air museum. It’s also a base for trips to bird islands and nearby fjords. If you want serious fjord scenery, Geiranger and Olden are more dramatic; Ålesund is for architecture, views and relaxed wandering.
Where cruise ships dock in Ålesund
Ships tie up at the cruise quays in the heart of town, a few minutes’ walk from the Art Nouveau streets and the Aksla stairs, which start in the Byparken park. Everything central is walkable. The Atlantic Sea Park is about 2 miles (3 km) west, by bus, taxi or a pleasant coastal walk. Giske and Alnes are about 20 to 30 minutes by road via undersea tunnels. Three to four hours covers the town.

Aksla viewpoint
scenery
Climb 418 steps from the town park to the Fjellstua viewpoint for a panorama of Ålesund’s islands, the sea and the jagged Sunnmøre Alps. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes up. A road also reaches the top if you prefer to ride, and there’s a café at the summit.

Art Nouveau Centre (Jugendstilsenteret)
culture
Housed in a former pharmacy with an original interior, the center tells the story of the 1904 fire and the town’s rebuilding, with a multimedia time machine and Art Nouveau design exhibits. Afterward, walk Kongens gate, Apotekergata and Kirkegata for the best facades.
- 3
Atlantic Sea Park (Atlanterhavsparken)
family
One of Northern Europe’s largest saltwater aquariums, built into the rocky shoreline west of town. See cod, wolffish and seals, and watch divers feed fish in the large Atlantic tank. Penguins are a family favorite.
- 4
Sunnmøre Museum
history
An open-air museum with old farmhouses, boat sheds and replicas of Viking-era and medieval ships. It sits in a scenic spot by the water, about 10 minutes by car east of the center.
- 5
Giske and Alnes lighthouse
scenery
Drive through undersea tunnels to the flat island of Giske, with a 12th-century marble chapel and sandy beaches, then on to Godøy and the Alnes lighthouse, where a café and gallery overlook the open sea. A relaxed half-day by tour or taxi.
- 6
Runde bird island
wildlife
Runde, about 1.5 to 2 hours away, hosts thousands of seabirds, including puffins, from roughly spring through summer. Boat trips and hikes get you close to the cliffs. It’s a long day, best on a tour.

For a snack, try waffles with brown cheese. Restaurants line the harbor, and there are good bakeries for a cheaper lunch.
