About Tromsø
Tromsø feels surprisingly urban for the Arctic, with a university, colorful wooden houses, lively pubs and a long tradition as the jumping-off point for polar expeditions. It sits on an island ringed by mountains and fjords, joined to the mainland by a high bridge leading to the striking Arctic Cathedral.
From roughly late May to late July the sun never sets, and from late autumn to early spring the northern lights are the big draw, so the experience depends heavily on when you sail. Summer calls are about mountain views, museums and wildlife; winter calls, especially on northern lights cruises, often include evening tours. Days are cool year-round, so pack layers.
Where cruise ships dock in Tromsø
Smaller ships can dock at Prostneset in the city center, steps from shops and museums. Most larger ships berth at Breivika, about 2.5 miles (4 km) north, with shuttles or city buses into town. The Arctic Cathedral is across the Tromsø Bridge on the mainland, roughly a 30-minute walk from the center or a short bus ride, and the Fjellheisen cable car station is a short walk beyond it. Husky and reindeer farms are outside town, so they need a tour. The center takes two to three hours on foot.
Best things to do in Tromsø on a cruise
- 1
Arctic Cathedral (Ishavskatedralen)
culture
Tromsø’s landmark, a white triangular church from 1965 whose layered roof evokes ice and Sámi tents. Its huge glass mosaic east window glows in low Arctic light. Midnight sun concerts are often held here in summer. It’s across the bridge from the center.
- 2
Fjellheisen cable car
scenery
The cable car rises to Mount Storsteinen, about 1,380 feet (421 m) up, in a few minutes, with views over the city, islands and mountains. In summer, the midnight sun shines over the panorama; in winter it’s a popular aurora viewpoint. Check for weather closures.
- 3
Polar Museum
history
Set in an old waterfront warehouse, the museum covers Arctic trapping, seal hunting and the polar explorers who launched expeditions from Tromsø, including Roald Amundsen. It’s small, atmospheric and right in the center.
- 4
Polaria
family
An Arctic aquarium and experience center in a building shaped like toppled ice floes. Bearded seals are the stars, especially at feeding time. Panoramic films and exhibits explain Arctic ecosystems and climate.
- 5
Husky farm visit
adventure
Visit a sled dog kennel outside town to meet huskies and puppies. In winter you can go dog sledding; in summer some farms offer wheeled cart rides or hikes with dogs. A tour handles transport.
- 6
Sámi culture and reindeer
culture
Sámi-run camps near Tromsø introduce the Indigenous people of northern Scandinavia, with reindeer feeding, joik singing and stories in a traditional lavvu tent. Winter visits may include reindeer sledding. Choose operators led by Sámi hosts.
- 7
Mack Brewery and Ølhallen
food
Mack has brewed beer in Tromsø since the 1870s. Its Ølhallen pub, in the original brewery building, pours a long list of taps and is a cozy stop in the center. Brewery tours are available.

What to eat and drink in Tromsø
Try Arctic char, stockfish (dried cod) and king crab, as well as bidos, a Sámi reindeer stew. Cloudberries, tart orange berries, appear in desserts with cream. Mack beer is the local pour. Restaurants on the harbor and Storgata serve seafood; prices are high, so bakeries and cafés are good for lunch.
Tips for your port day
- Pack warm layers even in summer; Arctic days can be cool and windy.
- If you dock at Breivika, use the shuttle or bus; walking to the center takes a while.
- Northern lights need dark, clear skies, typically from about September to March, and are never guaranteed.
- Book husky, reindeer and whale tours ahead; they fill quickly.
- Use a card for everything from the cable car to a pint at Ølhallen.
