About Belize City
Belize is an English-speaking country on the Caribbean coast of Central America with a fascinating mix of Kriol, Mestizo, Maya and Garifuna cultures. Belize City, the former capital, is a ramshackle, low-rise port city of wooden houses and canals; few cruisers linger there. Instead, they use it as a launchpad for some of the most varied excursions in the Western Caribbean, from rainforest rivers to coral reefs.
This port rewards adventurous travelers who enjoy nature and history. The trade-off is time: tenders take a while, and most excursions involve an hour or more of driving or boating each way. If you want an easy beach day by the ship or great shopping, Belize City isn’t the place, but its range of experiences is hard to match.
Where cruise ships dock in Belize City
Belize City is a tender port because the sea near shore is too shallow for cruise ships. Ships anchor several miles out, and tenders take around 20 to 30 minutes to reach the Belize City Tourism Village on the waterfront, a secure area of shops, bars and tour desks. Allow extra time for tender lines in both directions, especially when several ships are in. Tours depart from the village; cave tubing sites are about an hour away, Altun Ha around an hour, and Caye Caulker about 45 minutes by water taxi. Venturing into Belize City on foot beyond the tourist area isn’t recommended.
Best things to do in Belize City on a cruise
- 1
Cave tubing at Nohoch Che’en
adventure
Float on inner tubes through dark limestone caves on a jungle river, with headlamps lighting up formations the ancient Maya considered sacred. A short jungle hike leads to the river entrance. Water levels vary with rainfall, and operators may change routes or cancel in high water. It’s one of the most popular excursions in the Caribbean.
- 2
Altun Ha Mayan ruins
history
A compact Mayan city about an hour north of Belize City, centered on the Temple of the Masonry Altars, where archaeologists discovered a famous carved jade head. The grassy plazas and pyramids are easy to explore in an hour or two.
- 3
Snorkeling the Belize Barrier Reef
wildlife
Boat trips head to the reef and small cayes such as Goff’s Caye, a tiny sandy islet with snorkeling off the beach. Longer trips visit Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley, where nurse sharks and stingrays gather. Expect a boat ride of 30 minutes to over an hour.
- 4
Caye Caulker
beach
A laid-back island of sandy streets, colorful guesthouses and beach bars, reached by water taxi in about 45 minutes. Its motto is go slow, and it lives up to it. The Split, a channel cut by a hurricane, is the main swimming spot.
- 5
Belize Zoo
wildlife
A small, much-loved zoo about 45 minutes inland, home to native animals that are mostly rescued or orphaned, including jaguars, tapirs, harpy eagles and howler monkeys. Natural enclosures along forest paths give a real sense of Belize’s wildlife.
- 6
Lamanai
history
A large Mayan site deep in the jungle, reached by a scenic boat ride up the New River past crocodiles and birds. Highlights include the Mask Temple and the High Temple. It’s a long, full day and best as a ship’s excursion.
- 7
Howler monkeys at the Community Baboon Sanctuary
nature
A community-run sanctuary where local landowners protect black howler monkeys, known in Belize as baboons. Guided walks bring you close to the troops, and the guides share local knowledge of plants and wildlife.

What to eat and drink in Belize City
The national dish is rice and beans, cooked in coconut milk, with stew chicken and potato salad. For breakfast or snacks, look for fry jacks (puffy fried dough), garnaches and salbutes. Garifuna dishes such as hudut, fish in coconut broth with mashed plantain, are worth seeking out. Belikin is the national beer, and Marie Sharp’s hot sauce, made in Belize, is a favorite souvenir. Many excursions include a local lunch.
Tips for your port day
- Leave a generous buffer for tenders back to the ship; lines can be long late in the day.
- Stay inside the Tourism Village and on organized tours; Belize City itself isn’t a place to wander independently.
- Wear water shoes and quick-dry clothes for cave tubing, and bring insect repellent for the jungle.
- U.S. dollars are accepted everywhere at a fixed two-to-one rate, so you won’t need Belize dollars.
- Excursions that combine cave tubing and ruins are long; make sure the schedule fits comfortably before your last tender.
