About Costa Maya
Costa Maya was created for cruise ships on a remote stretch of the Quintana Roo coast, far from the resort crowds of Cancún. The port complex itself is a self-contained village of shops, bars, a big swimming pool and cultural shows, including performances by the Voladores, the traditional flyers who spin down from a tall pole. Just south, Mahahual is a small, sandy town with a seafront walkway lined with beach bars and palapas.
The port is perfect for an easy, relaxed day or a trip to some of the most atmospheric Mayan ruins on Caribbean itineraries. Beyond that, there’s not much here: no colonial town, no big shopping district and long drives to anything else. Travelers who want cities and nightlife should look to Cozumel, but those who like a slower pace often rate Costa Maya highly.
Where cruise ships dock in Costa Maya
Ships dock at the Puerto Costa Maya pier, which can handle several large ships at once. A long walkway or tram leads to the port complex, with shops, restaurants, a large pool area with loungers and a small beach. Everything inside is free to enter, though food, drinks and loungers in some areas cost extra. Taxis outside the gate take about 5 to 10 minutes to Mahahual’s malecón; you can also walk, but it’s a hot 30 minutes or more. Chacchoben is about an hour inland, and Bacalar Lagoon roughly 75 to 90 minutes away.
Best things to do in Costa Maya on a cruise
- 1
Chacchoben Mayan ruins
history
A Mayan ceremonial site surrounded by jungle, with restored pyramids and temples that date back more than 1,500 years. The grounds are shaded by tall trees, and you may hear howler monkeys. Tours take about four to five hours including the drive. Go early to avoid the heat and crowds.
- 2
Mahahual beach and malecón
beach
The village’s seafront walkway runs along a sandy beach with beach bars that offer loungers if you buy food or drinks. The water is shallow and calm inside the reef. It’s simple, inexpensive and much more relaxed than the port complex.
- 3
Bacalar Lagoon
nature
Known as the Lagoon of Seven Colors for its shifting shades of blue, this long freshwater lagoon is lovely for swimming, kayaking or a boat tour. It’s about 75 to 90 minutes inland, so a ship’s excursion is the easiest way to see it without worrying about time.
- 4
Snorkeling the Mesoamerican Reef
wildlife
The second-largest barrier reef system in the world runs just offshore. Snorkel tours from Mahahual and the port visit sections with coral heads, reef fish and rays. Conditions vary with wind, so check before going.
- 5
Port pool and Voladores show
family
If you’d rather stay close, the port complex has a large freshwater pool, swim-up bar, loungers and a small beach. Look for the Voladores de Papantla, who climb a tall pole and spin down on ropes in a centuries-old ritual. It’s an easy day for families with young kids.
- 6
Kohunlich ruins
history
A more remote Mayan site known for its giant stucco masks on the Temple of the Masks. It’s roughly two hours away, so it’s only realistic as a ship’s excursion on a long port day. Expect few visitors and lots of jungle.

What to eat and drink in Costa Maya
Yucatán and Caribbean flavors dominate. Try tikin xic (fish grilled with achiote paste), cochinita pibil, fresh ceviche, fish tacos and salbutes. Beach bars in Mahahual serve grilled whole fish, guacamole and cold Mexican beer or micheladas. Fresh coconut water and aguas frescas (fruit drinks) are refreshing in the heat. Prices are usually lower in Mahahual than inside the port.
Tips for your port day
- Leave the port complex for at least part of the day; Mahahual is cheaper, more relaxed and only a few minutes away.
- Bring cash in small bills for taxis and Mahahual’s beach bars; pesos get a better rate than dollars.
- For ruins, wear sturdy shoes, a hat and insect repellent, and carry water.
- Agree on taxi fares before you go, and confirm a return pickup if you’re heading somewhere quiet.
- Reef-safe sunscreen helps protect the reef right off the beach.
