Roatán cruise port guide

Roatán is the largest of Honduras’s Bay Islands, a hilly, green island fringed by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, with some of the best snorkeling and diving in the Western Caribbean. Ships dock at Mahogany Bay or the Port of Roatán in Coxen Hole, and most visitors head to the powdery sand of West Bay, the dive village of West End or a wildlife park with monkeys and sloths.

About Roatán

Roatán has a character all its own. English-speaking islanders whose roots go back to British settlers and Caribbean migrants live alongside Spanish-speaking Hondurans and Garifuna communities, and the island’s ridge of jungle-covered hills slopes down to coves, mangroves and reef. The reef runs close to shore, so you can often snorkel straight off the beach.

It’s a great port for beach days, snorkeling, diving and easy wildlife encounters, and it suits families well. Roads are narrow and hilly, so even short distances take time, and the island can feel busy near the ports when several ships are in. Travelers looking for colonial architecture or big shopping won’t find much, but those who love the water usually rate it highly.

Where cruise ships dock in Roatán

Ships use one of two cruise centers on the south coast. Mahogany Bay, built by Carnival Corporation near French Harbour, has shops, restaurants and its own beach, reached by a short walk or a chairlift ride. The Port of Roatán (Town Center) in Coxen Hole is used by other lines and sits next to the island’s main town. Taxis and tour vans wait at both; agree on fares first. West Bay Beach is about 25 to 35 minutes from Coxen Hole and a little farther from Mahogany Bay. West End is about 20 to 30 minutes away.

Best things to do in Roatán on a cruise

  1. 1

    West Bay Beach

    beach

Roatán’s best-known beach, a long stretch of soft white sand with calm water and reef just offshore for snorkeling. Beach clubs and resorts rent loungers and serve food and drinks. It gets busy on cruise days, but the walk along the sand reveals quieter spots.

  2. 2

    Snorkeling and diving the reef

    wildlife

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef runs right along Roatán’s coast, protected in places by the Roatán Marine Park. Dive and snorkel boats from West End and West Bay visit walls, coral gardens and wrecks, with turtles, rays and plenty of reef fish.

  3. 3

    West End village

    culture

A laid-back strip of dive shops, bars and restaurants along a sandy road and Half Moon Bay, a sheltered cove where you can snorkel from the shore. It’s a good place for lunch and a more local, island feel than West Bay.

  4. 4

    Gumbalimba Park

    family

A nature park with tropical gardens, caves, a beach and friendly white-faced capuchin monkeys and macaws that may climb on visitors. Some packages include zip lines or snorkeling. It’s about 20 to 30 minutes from the ports and a favorite with families.

  5. 5

    Zip-lining and canopy tours

    adventure

Several canopy parks on the island’s hills offer zip lines through the forest with views of the coast. They’re often combined with beach time or wildlife encounters. Check weight and age limits before you reserve.

  6. 6

    Sloth and wildlife encounters

    wildlife

Small wildlife parks across the island let visitors see and sometimes hold sloths, monkeys and parrots. Choose operators that prioritize animal welfare, avoid handling where it stresses animals, and follow the guides’ instructions.

  7. 7

    Punta Gorda Garifuna community

    culture

On the north coast, Punta Gorda is considered the oldest Garifuna settlement in Honduras, founded in the 1790s. Visitors can see traditional dance and music and try Garifuna food. It’s a long drive from the ports, so it works best as part of a guided tour.

What to eat and drink in Roatán

Look for baleadas, thick flour tortillas folded around refried beans, cheese and cream, often with egg or meat. Fresh fried fish with tostones (fried plantains), conch soup made with coconut milk, and coconut bread are island favorites. Garifuna dishes such as machuca (mashed plantains with fish soup) appear in local restaurants. Wash it down with Salva Vida or Port Royal beer, or a rum punch at a beach bar.

Tips for your port day

  • Confirm which port your ship uses; Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole are about 15 minutes apart, which matters for drivers and tours.
  • Agree on taxi fares before leaving, and clarify whether the price is per person or per car, and in dollars or lempiras.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and water shoes, and consider your own snorkel gear for West Bay and Half Moon Bay.
  • Roads are slow and winding, so allow at least an hour of buffer when returning from West Bay or West End.
  • Check the U.S. State Department advisory for Honduras; Roatán is generally calmer than the mainland, but normal precautions apply.
