Cairns is the tropical gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree rainforest in Far North Queensland. Smaller ships dock in town near the Esplanade, while larger ships often anchor off Yorkeys Knob, about 25 minutes north, and tender in. The big choices are a reef trip by fast catamaran or the Kuranda rainforest village by scenic railway and cableway.

About Cairns

Cairns is a relaxed, warm-weather town built for outdoor adventure, with a waterfront Esplanade, a free swimming lagoon and plenty of tour operators. Two World Heritage areas meet here: the Great Barrier Reef offshore and the ancient Wet Tropics rainforest on the mountains behind town.

Most cruisers head to the reef for snorkeling or diving, or up to Kuranda via the Skyrail cableway and historic railway. Others relax by the lagoon and explore town. It’s ideal for nature lovers and active travelers. The climate is hot and humid, and marine stingers are a seasonal concern.

Where cruise ships dock in Cairns

Smaller ships berth at the Cairns cruise terminal on Trinity Inlet, a short walk from the Esplanade and town center. Larger ships often anchor off Yorkeys Knob and tender passengers to the marina there, followed by a coach transfer of about 25 minutes to Cairns or to tour departure points. Reef boats leave from the Reef Fleet Terminal in town. The Skyrail base station is about 15 to 20 minutes north of Cairns. Allow a full day for reef or Kuranda trips.

Best things to do in Cairns on a cruise

  1. 1

    Outer Great Barrier Reef

    adventure

High-speed catamarans take about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach outer reef pontoons or moorings, where you can snorkel, dive, take a semi-submersible or try a glass-bottom boat. Stinger suits are usually provided. It’s a long day, so check timing against all aboard.

  2. 2

    Green Island

    beach

A coral cay about 45 minutes by boat, with rainforest walks, beaches and snorkeling right off the sand. It’s a shorter, more relaxed reef option, suitable for families and non-swimmers with glass-bottom boat tours.

  3. 3

    Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail

    nature

Ride the historic railway up through the Barron Gorge, past waterfalls, to Kuranda village, then glide back over the rainforest canopy on the Skyrail cableway, or vice versa. Kuranda has markets, wildlife parks and a butterfly sanctuary.

  4. 4

    Cairns Esplanade Lagoon

    family

A free, saltwater swimming lagoon on the waterfront, the safe alternative to the sea, where crocodiles and stingers are risks. Surrounded by lawns, barbecues and boardwalks, it’s perfect for a relaxed day.

  5. 5

    Mossman Gorge

    nature

About 1.25 hours north, at the southern edge of the Daintree, Mossman Gorge has clear river pools and rainforest trails. Indigenous-guided walks with the Kuku Yalanji people share culture and bush knowledge.

  6. 6

    Daintree River and Cape Tribulation

    wildlife

Further north, the Daintree River offers crocodile-spotting cruises, and Cape Tribulation is where the rainforest meets the reef. It’s about 2 to 2.5 hours each way, so it’s a long day.

  7. 7

    Cairns Aquarium

    family

An aquarium in town showcasing the reef and rainforest ecosystems of Far North Queensland, from freshwater creatures to reef sharks. A good option on rainy days or for families.

What to eat and drink in Cairns

Try barramundi, mud crab, coral trout and prawns, along with tropical fruit like mango, lychee and custard apple. Local coffee grown on the Atherton Tablelands is worth a taste. Rusty’s Market sells fresh produce on weekends. The Esplanade has many restaurants and casual cafés.

Tips for your port day

  • Wear a stinger suit when swimming in the sea, especially from roughly November to May.
  • Never swim in rivers or the sea near Cairns outside designated areas; crocodiles are present.
  • Pack reef-safe sunscreen and a long-sleeved swim shirt for snorkeling; the tropical sun burns fast on the water.
  • If you tender at Yorkeys Knob, factor in the transfer time when planning independent tours.
  • Bring a dry bag for your phone and camera on reef boats; spray and passing showers are common.

Cairns cruise FAQs

Where do cruise ships dock in Cairns?

Smaller ships dock at the cruise terminal near the town center. Larger ships often anchor off Yorkeys Knob, about 25 minutes north, and tender passengers ashore.

How far is the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns?

Outer reef sites are about 1.5 to 2 hours by fast catamaran. Green Island is closer, about 45 minutes.

Can you swim in the sea at Cairns?

Not in town. Use the Esplanade Lagoon. On reef trips, swim with a stinger suit and follow crew guidance.

Is Kuranda worth visiting on a cruise?

Yes. The scenic railway and Skyrail cableway are spectacular, and Kuranda village is fun to explore.
