Brisbane is Queensland’s sunny, laid-back capital, set along a winding river with parks, swimming lagoons and one of the world’s best-known koala sanctuaries. Most large ships dock at the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal near the river mouth, about 30 to 40 minutes from downtown, so plan your transfers. About Brisbane

Brisbane has a relaxed subtropical feel, with residents spending time outdoors in riverside parks and on fast ferries gliding along the Brisbane River. South Bank’s cultural precinct, the art galleries and the Story Bridge define the city center.

On a port day, many cruisers meet the koalas at Lone Pine, wander South Bank and swim at Streets Beach, or ride the CityCat ferry. Others head to the Gold Coast beaches or Australia Zoo. Brisbane is also a homeport for cruises to the South Pacific and Queensland, so the terminal can be busy on turnaround days.

Where cruise ships dock in Brisbane

Most ships use the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal at Luggage Point, near the mouth of the Brisbane River, about 30 to 40 minutes by road from the central business district. There’s no convenient public transport, so use the ship’s shuttle, a taxi or a rideshare. Some smaller ships berth at Portside Wharf in Hamilton, closer to the city, with ferries nearby. In the city, CityCat ferries and buses link the main sights, and much of the center is walkable. The Gold Coast is about 1 to 1.5 hours south, and Australia Zoo about the same distance north.

Tips for your port day

  • Check where your ship docks; the main terminal is far from the city.
  • Book shuttles or rideshares in advance for busy days.
  • Bring sunscreen and a hat; the Queensland sun is strong year-round.
  • Lone Pine is popular with cruise groups; arrive early for quieter viewing.
  • Starting your cruise here? Your Australian visa or ETA must be approved before check-in, even for a short stay in the country.
  • Arriving from overseas? Australia’s biosecurity checks are strict, so declare food, plant and animal products rather than risk a fine.
