About Fiji

Fijians are famous for their hospitality, and many cruisers say the warmth of the welcome is the highlight. Culture is a big part of any visit: indigenous iTaukei village traditions, a large Indo-Fijian community with Hindu temples and curry houses, and a relaxed island pace known locally as “Fiji time.”

Lautoka, the “Sugar City,” is close to Nadi and the Mamanuca islands, with their white-sand beaches and reefs. Suva is a busy, rainier capital with the country’s best museum and market, plus rainforest, river trips and the shark diving of Beqa Lagoon within reach. Some itineraries also call at smaller islands such as Dravuni or Savusavu.

Fiji suits beach lovers, snorkelers and travelers interested in Pacific culture. Its towns are workaday rather than polished, so the best experiences are outside them.

Where cruise ships dock in Fiji

In Lautoka, ships berth at the commercial wharf, a short shuttle or walk from the town center and market; Nadi and its attractions are about 30 to 40 minutes by road, and boats to the Mamanuca islands leave from Port Denarau near Nadi. In Suva, ships dock at Kings Wharf, within walking distance of downtown, the market and, a little further, the Fiji Museum. Colo-i-Suva Forest Park is about 20 minutes away, and Pacific Harbour and the Navua River roughly an hour. Taxis are inexpensive; agree on the fare or check the meter.

Best things to do in Fiji on a cruise

  1. 1

    Village visit and kava ceremony

    culture

Many tours visit a traditional village, where you’re welcomed with a sevusevu ceremony and offered kava, a peppery drink made from a root that leaves your lips slightly numb. Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and remove hats in villages.

  2. 2

    Mamanuca island day trip

    beach

From Lautoka, catamaran and boat trips head to the Mamanuca islands for snorkeling, swimming and beach lunches on small coral islands. The water is clear and the reefs are colorful. Choose a trip with a firm return time to Port Denarau.

  3. 3

Garden of the Sleeping Giant and Sabeto mud pools

    nature

At the foot of the Sabeto mountains near Nadi, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant showcases orchids along jungle boardwalks. Nearby, the Sabeto mud pools let you coat yourself in warm mud and soak in hot springs. Both are easy half-day stops from Lautoka.

  4. 4

    Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple

    culture

In Nadi, this colorful Dravidian-style Hindu temple is covered in intricate carvings and painted deities, a striking sign of Fiji’s Indo-Fijian heritage. Visitors must dress modestly and remove shoes.

  5. 5

    Fiji Museum and Suva Market

    history

In Suva’s Thurston Gardens, the Fiji Museum displays war clubs, canoes and artifacts, including the rudder of HMS Bounty. Downtown, the municipal market is one of the largest in the Pacific, piled with taro, cassava, tropical fruit and kava root.

  6. 6

    Navua River and Pacific Harbour

    adventure

From Suva, longboat trips travel up the Navua River through a canyon of waterfalls to a riverside village. Pacific Harbour, nearby, is known for shark dives in Beqa Lagoon and for firewalking performances, a tradition from Beqa island.

What to eat and drink in Fiji

Try kokoda, Fiji’s version of ceviche, with fish marinated in lime and coconut cream; lovo, meats and root vegetables cooked in an underground oven; and palusami, taro leaves baked with coconut cream. Indo-Fijian curries and roti are everywhere, especially in Lautoka and Nadi. Tropical fruit is abundant at markets, and Fiji Bitter and Fiji Gold are the local beers. Kava, called yaqona or grog, is part of nearly every gathering.

Tips for your port day

  • Pack a sulu or sarong and a T-shirt for village visits; cover shoulders and knees, remove hats and avoid touching anyone’s head.
  • Suva is on Viti Levu’s wet side and gets frequent showers, while Lautoka is usually sunnier; dress for the port you’re in.
  • Cyclone season runs roughly November to April and can occasionally change itineraries.
  • Use licensed taxis, agree on fares in advance and keep valuables secure, especially in Suva’s busy downtown.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and water shoes for snorkeling and island trips.

Fiji cruise FAQs

Where do cruise ships dock in Fiji?

Most often at Lautoka on the west side of Viti Levu or Suva, the capital, on the southeast coast. Some itineraries also call at smaller islands such as Dravuni or Savusavu.

What is the best excursion from Lautoka?

A Mamanuca island day trip for beaches and snorkeling, or a village visit with a kava ceremony for culture. The Sabeto mud pools are a fun shorter option.

Is Fiji safe for cruise passengers?

Generally, yes. Fijians are known for their friendliness. Take normal precautions with valuables, especially in Suva and Lautoka town centers.

What should I wear for a Fijian village visit?

Clothing that covers shoulders and knees, such as a sulu or sarong and a T-shirt. Remove hats and sunglasses, and follow your guide’s lead on customs.

Do US citizens need a visa for Fiji?

No. US and Canadian visitors are admitted without a visa for short stays. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your trip, which most cruise lines require anyway.
