Moorea cruise port guide

Moorea, a short hop from Tahiti, is a dramatic tender stop of jagged green peaks, deep bays and a clear turquoise lagoon. Most cruisers spend the day on the water, snorkeling with stingrays and blacktip reef sharks, or on a 4x4 tour to the Belvedere Lookout over Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay. It’s quieter and less developed than Bora Bora.

About Moorea

Moorea’s volcanic skyline is one of the most recognizable in the South Pacific, with sawtooth ridges and peaks such as Mount Rotui rising straight from two deep bays on the north coast. A fringing reef encloses a lagoon of glassy, shallow water, and pineapple fields and vanilla plots fill the valleys.

Ships usually anchor in one of the north-shore bays, and tenders bring you ashore. From there, the day is easygoing: a lagoon tour with snorkeling, a motu picnic, a drive up to the Belvedere, or simply a beach and a fresh pineapple juice. The island road loops about 37 miles (60 km), so you can circle it in a few hours.

Moorea suits snorkelers, hikers and anyone who loves big scenery without big crowds. It’s pricey, like all of French Polynesia, and there’s little nightlife or shopping.

Where cruise ships dock in Moorea

Moorea is a tender port. Ships usually anchor in Opunohu Bay or Cook’s Bay on the north coast, and tenders land at a small pier or beach area where tour operators and a few taxis wait. Taxis are limited and expensive, so pre-booking tours or a rental car is wise. The Belvedere Lookout is about 20 to 30 minutes by road from the bays, and Temae Beach on the northeast corner about 20 to 30 minutes. Lagoon tours often pick up right from the landing area.

Best things to do in Moorea on a cruise

  1. 1

Lagoon snorkel with rays and sharks

    wildlife

Boat tours take you to shallow sandbars where southern stingrays glide around your legs and blacktip reef sharks patrol nearby. Most tours add a coral garden snorkel and a motu stop. Follow the guide’s instructions and avoid touching the animals.

  2. 2

    Belvedere Lookout

    scenery

A winding road climbs through pineapple fields to a viewpoint looking down on both Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay, divided by the pyramid of Mount Rotui. It’s Moorea’s classic view. Many 4x4 tours include it along with archaeological sites.

  3. 3

    Marae Titiroa and Opunohu Valley

    history

Below the Belvedere, the Opunohu Valley holds restored marae, stone platforms once used for ceremonies by ancient Polynesians, set among towering Tahitian chestnut trees. Guides explain the traditions and history of the sites.

  4. 4

    Humpback whale watching

    wildlife

From roughly July to November, humpback whales visit French Polynesia’s waters to mate and calve, and Moorea is one of the best places to see them. Licensed operators follow strict approach rules. Sightings aren’t guaranteed.

  5. 5

    Temae Beach

    beach

One of Moorea’s best public beaches, with white sand and clear water near the airport on the northeast coast. Snorkeling over the reef is good when the water is calm, though currents can be strong further out.

  6. 6

    Juice factory and agricultural school

    food

Moorea is famous for its sweet pineapples. Visit the local juice factory and distillery for tastings of fruit juices and liqueurs, and stop at the agricultural school in the Opunohu Valley for fresh fruit, jams and pineapple fields.

What to eat and drink in Moorea

Poisson cru, French Polynesia’s national dish, is raw tuna marinated in lime and coconut milk with vegetables; you’ll find it everywhere. Try mahi mahi or tuna grilled with vanilla sauce, and chao men, the local take on Chinese noodles. A ma’a Tahiti feast, cooked in an underground oven, is sometimes offered at cultural shows. Fresh Moorea pineapple, coconut and Hinano beer complete the picture. Food trucks called roulottes offer good-value meals.

Tips for your port day

  • Book lagoon tours and island drives in advance; taxis are scarce and expensive on Moorea.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes and a rash guard; the sun is strong and coral can be sharp.
  • Carry some local currency for small vendors and roulottes, as cards aren’t always accepted.
  • Allow plenty of time for the return tender; lines can build late in the day.
  • The drier season runs roughly May to October; the wetter months bring heavier showers and humidity.
