About Doha
Doha has transformed rapidly, especially in the run-up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, from a small pearling town into a city of museums, skyscrapers and new districts. Yet its traditional heart remains in Souq Waqif, a restored market of alleys, spice stalls, falcon shops and cafés.
For cruisers, it’s an easy port: the cruise terminal sits in the colorful Mina District, and the Corniche waterfront leads to the Museum of Islamic Art. A port day usually combines the museum, Souq Waqif and the National Museum of Qatar, perhaps with Katara Cultural Village or a desert safari to the dunes and the Inland Sea.
Doha suits culture lovers and architecture fans. It’s conservative by Western standards, quiet in the midday heat and lively in the evening, and alcohol is limited to licensed hotel venues.
Where cruise ships dock in Doha
Ships berth at the Grand Cruise Terminal in Old Doha Port, within the redeveloped Mina District. The Museum of Islamic Art is about a 15 to 20 minute walk along the waterfront, and Souq Waqif a little further, though a taxi is more comfortable in the heat. The National Museum of Qatar is about 10 minutes by car, and Katara and The Pearl around 20 to 30 minutes. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are easy to use, and the Doha Metro is modern and efficient. Desert safaris to Khor Al Adaid take about half a day.

Museum of Islamic Art
culture
Designed by I. M. Pei, this geometric limestone building on its own island holds a superb collection of manuscripts, ceramics, textiles and metalwork spanning over a thousand years. The surrounding MIA Park offers skyline views across the bay.
- 2
Souq Waqif
shopping
A restored traditional market of narrow lanes selling spices, perfumes, textiles and crafts, with restaurants and shisha cafés. Next door, the Falcon Souq sells birds and equipment, and a falcon hospital treats these prized birds. It’s most atmospheric in the late afternoon.
- 3
National Museum of Qatar
culture
Jean Nouvel’s building is inspired by the desert rose crystal, with interlocking discs that seem to burst from the ground. Inside, immersive galleries tell the story of Qatar’s geology, Bedouin life, pearling and modern transformation.
- 4
Katara Cultural Village
culture
A cultural district with an amphitheater, galleries, a colorful mosque, pigeon towers and a public beach. Restaurants line the waterfront, and the architecture blends traditional styles in a modern setting.
- 5
Desert safari and the Inland Sea
adventure
Four-wheel-drive tours head south to towering dunes for dune bashing, sandboarding and camel rides, ending at Khor Al Adaid, where the sea reaches deep into the desert. The ride is bumpy and not for those with back problems.
- 6
Msheireb Downtown and The Pearl
shopping
Msheireb is a sustainable new downtown, with small museums in restored heritage houses telling Doha’s social history. The Pearl-Qatar, an artificial island, has a marina, Venetian-style canals and upscale shops and restaurants.

What to eat and drink in Doha
Qatari food shares much with the wider Gulf. Try machboos, spiced rice with meat or fish; harees, a comforting wheat and meat porridge; and luqaimat, sweet fried dumplings with date syrup. Balaleet, sweet vermicelli topped with an omelet, is a traditional breakfast. Karak tea, strong and milky with cardamom, is Doha’s everyday drink. Souq Waqif has Persian, Lebanese, Yemeni and Moroccan restaurants. Alcohol is only available in licensed hotel bars and restaurants.
Tips for your port day
- Cover shoulders and knees in public places such as malls, museums and the souq; Qatar asks visitors to dress modestly.
- Visit outdoor sights in the morning or late afternoon; midday heat can be intense even in the cooler months.
- US and Canadian citizens can typically enter Qatar visa-free for short visits, but check current rules with your cruise line.
- Use metered taxis, ride-hailing apps or the metro; Doha is spread out and not built for walking.
- During Ramadan, many restaurants close during daylight hours and you should avoid eating or drinking in public.
