Cruises from Dubai
Dubai is the Arabian Gulf’s main cruise hub, with sailings from about November to April, when the desert heat eases. Most ships use the Mina Rashid cruise terminal near old Dubai, about 20 to 30 minutes from Dubai International Airport, while some use Dubai Harbour near the Marina. Typical cruises run seven nights to Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Oman, and Emirates’ nonstop flights from across North America make it easy to reach.

Sailing from Dubai
Dubai turned itself into a winter cruise base in the 2000s, and today ships gather here when the Mediterranean goes quiet. The standard itinerary is a 7-night Arabian Gulf round trip, calling at some combination of Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas Island, Doha, Muscat or Khasab in Oman, and Bahrain. Longer voyages head to India, the Seychelles, Mauritius or Southeast Asia, and spring repositioning cruises sail west toward Europe, with routings depending on Red Sea security.
For North Americans, Dubai works well as a winter escape. Emirates flies nonstop from more than a dozen US and Canadian cities, the city is safe and polished, and pre-cruise days can mix skyscraper views, desert dunes, old souks and beach time. It also pairs neatly with a stopover on the way to Asia or Africa.
It isn’t for everyone. Dubai can feel manufactured, alcohol is limited to licensed venues, and conservative dress is expected in many places. Regional tensions have also disrupted Gulf and Red Sea itineraries in recent seasons, so check the latest routing and the U.S. State Department advisory before you book.

Mina Rashid cruise terminals
Most cruise ships berth at Mina Rashid, the historic port at the mouth of Dubai Creek, where the large Hamdan bin Mohammed Cruise Terminal handles check-in. The original Queen Elizabeth 2, now a floating hotel with restaurants, is moored nearby and makes a fun visit before boarding. Some lines use the Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal, between Dubai Marina and the Palm Jumeirah, about 30 minutes farther south. Check your documents for the terminal, since they’re far apart. At both, taxis drop off at the entrance, bags are taken at the curb and check-in runs on assigned time slots; processing is generally quick and well organized.
Getting to the port
Flying in
Dubai International (DXB) is about 20 to 30 minutes by taxi from Mina Rashid and roughly 40 minutes from Dubai Harbour, depending on traffic. Taxis are metered and plentiful at every terminal, and the Dubai Metro’s Red Line serves the airport but isn’t practical with cruise luggage. Emirates flies nonstop from many US and Canadian cities, with flights of about 12 to 16 hours. Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport (AUH), served by Etihad, is about 1.5 hours away by car.
Driving
Dubai’s main artery, Sheikh Zayed Road (E11), runs parallel to the coast; Mina Rashid is reached via Al Mina Road near Bur Dubai, while Dubai Harbour is just off Sheikh Zayed Road near Dubai Marina. Roads are good, but rush-hour traffic is heavy, and many roads use the electronic Salik toll system, which rental cars include.
Parking
Mina Rashid and Dubai Harbour both offer paid parking for cruise passengers, though most international visitors fly in and use taxis or transfers. If you’re driving from elsewhere in the UAE, confirm long-stay parking arrangements with your terminal ahead of time.
Where to stay before a cruise from Dubai
Downtown Dubai, around the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, is the most popular base, with the fountains and city views on your doorstep, about 20 minutes from Mina Rashid. Bur Dubai and Deira, along Dubai Creek, are older, more affordable and closest to Mina Rashid and the souks. Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Beach Residence and the Palm Jumeirah offer beach resorts and are closest to Dubai Harbour. Staying aboard the QE2 at Mina Rashid is a novelty for ocean-liner fans.
Things to do in Dubai before or after your cruise
- 1
Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain
scenery
The world’s tallest building has observation decks on its upper floors; book a timed ticket, ideally around sunset, to see the city by day and night. Below, the Dubai Fountain performs choreographed shows on the lake in the evenings, best seen from the Dubai Mall promenade or a lakeside restaurant.
- 2
Old Dubai, the creek and the souks
culture
Wander the restored wind-tower houses of the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, then cross Dubai Creek on an abra, a traditional wooden water taxi, for a token fare. On the Deira side, the Spice Souk and Gold Souk are lively and atmospheric, and haggling is expected for most purchases.
- 3
Desert safari
adventure
Afternoon desert tours drive into the red dunes outside the city for dune bashing in 4x4s, sandboarding and camel rides, often ending with a barbecue dinner and entertainment at a desert camp. Quieter options include sunrise hot-air balloon flights and conservation-focused drives. Choose a reputable operator, and skip dune bashing if you’re prone to motion sickness.
- 4
Museum of the Future
culture
This torus-shaped building covered in Arabic calligraphy, on Sheikh Zayed Road, houses immersive exhibits imagining life decades from now, covering space travel, ecology and well-being. The architecture alone is worth a photo stop; timed tickets are required and often sell out, so book ahead.
- 5
Abu Dhabi day trip
culture
About 1.5 hours away, the UAE capital is home to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a dazzling white marble mosque with one of the world’s largest hand-knotted carpets, and the Louvre Abu Dhabi, whose domed roof filters sunlight like a palm canopy. Dress modestly for the mosque; women must cover their hair.
- 6
Dubai beaches
beach
Kite Beach and the beach at Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) are free public stretches of pale sand with promenades, cafés and views of the Burj Al Arab or the Marina towers. Winter water temperatures are pleasant for swimming. Swimwear is fine on the beach, but cover up when you walk into shops or restaurants.
When cruises sail from Dubai
The cruise season runs from about November to April. December to February is most comfortable, with warm, sunny days and cool evenings, and it’s also the busiest and most expensive time, especially around Christmas, New Year and the Dubai Shopping Festival. November and March are warmer but still pleasant, and April starts to heat up quickly. From May to October, intense heat means almost no cruises.

Embarkation day tips
- Arrive at least one night early, two if you want the Burj Khalifa, old Dubai and a desert trip. Overnight flights from North America arrive in the evening or early morning.
- Dress modestly in malls, souks and government buildings, covering shoulders and knees, and follow the stricter dress rules at mosques. Beachwear belongs on the beach or by the pool.
- Some prescription medications, including certain painkillers and ADHD drugs, are controlled in the UAE. Carry prescriptions and check the official UAE rules before you pack them.
- Check whether your trip falls during Ramadan, whose dates move earlier each year. Many restaurants stay open for visitors, but be respectful about eating and drinking in public during daylight hours.
- Even in winter, the midday sun is strong. Plan outdoor sightseeing for morning and late afternoon, and carry water.
