About Muscat
Muscat feels very different from its flashier Gulf neighbors. Building heights are limited, whitewashed houses curve around bays, and craggy brown mountains rise behind the city. Oman has a long seafaring history, once controlling trade routes as far as Zanzibar, and that heritage is everywhere, from Portuguese-era forts to dhows in the harbor.
The port at Muttrah is perfectly placed. You can stroll the Corniche, haggle for frankincense and silver in Muttrah Souq, and climb to Muttrah Fort for harbor views, all on foot. Taxis or tours reach the magnificent Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the Royal Opera House and the old walled quarter around Al Alam Palace in under half an hour.
Muscat suits culture lovers, photographers and anyone wanting an authentic taste of Arabia. Outside winter, heat is intense, and adventurous excursions to the wadis require good fitness.
Where cruise ships dock in Muscat
Ships berth at Port Sultan Qaboos in Muttrah, and a shuttle or short walk takes you to the port gate. From there, the Muttrah Corniche and souq are about 10 to 15 minutes on foot. Old Muscat, with Al Alam Palace and the National Museum, is about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi, and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque around 30 minutes. Wadi Shab and the Bimmah Sinkhole are roughly 1 to 1.5 hours down the coast, and Nizwa about 1.5 to 2 hours inland. Agree on taxi fares in advance or use a ride-hailing app.
Best things to do in Muscat on a cruise
- 1
Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
culture
A masterpiece of modern Islamic architecture with a vast prayer hall, one of the world’s largest hand-woven carpets and a dazzling crystal chandelier. Visiting times for non-Muslims are limited, usually mornings, so check before you go. Women must cover arms, legs and hair, and men need long trousers.
- 2
Muttrah Souq
shopping
One of the oldest markets in the Arab world, this covered maze of alleys sells frankincense, perfume oils, silver jewelry, khanjar daggers, pashminas and spices. Bargaining is expected but polite. It’s a short walk from the ship and best in the morning.
- 3
Muttrah Corniche and Fort
scenery
The curving seafront promenade is lined with traditional merchant houses and mosques, with mountains behind and dhows in the harbor. Climb the steps to the Portuguese-era Muttrah Fort or a hillside watchtower for the best views over the bay.
- 4
Old Muscat and Al Alam Palace
history
The ceremonial Al Alam Palace, with its blue and gold facade, is flanked by the 16th-century Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts. You can view them from outside only, but the setting is striking. The National Museum and Bait Al Zubair museum nearby explain Omani history and culture.
- 5
Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole
adventure
Wadi Shab is a canyon of turquoise pools reached by a short boat crossing and a rocky hike, with a swim through a narrow gap to a cave waterfall for the adventurous. The nearby Bimmah Sinkhole is a limestone pool you can swim in. It’s a long, active day.
- 6
Royal Opera House Muscat
culture
Built of white stone with Omani and Islamic design elements, the opera house has a sumptuous wooden auditorium. Guided tours run on many days when there are no rehearsals or performances. It’s a striking example of Oman’s investment in the arts.

What to eat and drink in Muscat
Omani hospitality starts with qahwa, cardamom-scented coffee served with dates. Omani halwa, a sticky, glossy sweet flavored with rosewater and saffron, is sold in the souq and makes a great gift. Try shuwa, marinated lamb or goat slow-cooked in an underground pit, often at festivals; mashuai, grilled kingfish with lemon rice; and majboos, spiced rice with meat. Muttrah has many small cafés serving shawarma and fresh juice.
Tips for your port day
- Pack modest clothing; cover shoulders and knees in the city, and bring a headscarf if visiting the Grand Mosque.
- Check the Grand Mosque’s visiting times for non-Muslims before planning your day, and avoid Fridays.
- US and Canadian citizens can usually visit Oman visa-free for short stays, but confirm requirements with your cruise line.
- Carry water and sun protection; even winter days are hot in the sun, and wadi trips involve rough terrain.
- Frankincense is the classic souvenir; buy loose resin in small bags and check your next ports’ import rules.
