About Monte Carlo

Monaco is the world’s second-smallest country, packed onto a strip of steep hillside between the French Alps and the sea. Superyachts fill Port Hercule, Formula 1 cars race through its streets each spring, and the Grimaldi family has ruled from the palace on the Rock for more than 700 years.

A port day typically means climbing to Monaco-Ville for the palace, the cathedral where Grace Kelly is buried and the Oceanographic Museum, then crossing the harbor to Monte Carlo for the casino and café terraces. Some passengers add a trip to Èze or Nice. It suits anyone curious about the glamour; budget-minded travelers should know drinks and meals here are among the most expensive in Europe.

Where cruise ships dock in Monte Carlo

Depending on size, ships either dock at the cruise pier on the long breakwater in Port Hercule or anchor offshore and tender passengers into the harbor. Either way, you arrive at the foot of the city. Monaco-Ville, on the Rock, is a 15–20 minute uphill walk via ramps and steps, and the Casino is about 15 minutes in the other direction. Public elevators and escalators help with the hills, and local buses are inexpensive. Monaco’s train station connects to Nice in about 20 minutes and to Èze-sur-Mer and Villefranche in less.

Best things to do in Monte Carlo on a cruise

  1. 1

    Prince’s Palace and Monaco-Ville

    history

The Grimaldi palace sits atop the Rock, and its state apartments open to visitors for part of the year. The changing of the guard in the palace square happens in the late morning and draws a crowd, so arrive early. Afterward, wander the old town’s pastel lanes.

  2. 2

    Oceanographic Museum

    family

Built into the cliff face more than a century ago and once directed by Jacques Cousteau, this grand museum combines a large aquarium with historic marine science collections. The rooftop terrace has wide views along the coast. Families often rate it the best stop in Monaco.

  3. 3

    Monaco Cathedral

    history

The white stone Romanesque-Revival cathedral holds the tombs of past princes, including Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace, the former actress Grace Kelly. Entry is free; dress modestly.

  4. 4

Casino de Monte-Carlo and Place du Casino

    culture

The Belle Époque casino, designed by Charles Garnier, is the symbol of Monte Carlo. Admire the atrium and the supercars parked outside the Hôtel de Paris and Café de Paris. The gaming rooms charge admission, require a passport or ID and have a dress code, so beachwear won’t do.

  5. 5

    Formula 1 circuit walk

    culture

Much of the Monaco Grand Prix route is ordinary streets the rest of the year. Follow the track from the harbor up Avenue d’Ostende to Casino Square, around the famous hairpin and through the tunnel, spotting painted curbs and track markings along the way.

  6. 6

Jardin Exotique and Princess Grace Rose Garden

    nature

The Jardin Exotique clings to a cliff above Fontvieille with succulents and cacti and panoramic views. Down in Fontvieille, the Princess Grace Rose Garden is a peaceful spot with thousands of rose bushes. Check before you go, as the exotic garden has had long closures for works.

What to eat and drink in Monte Carlo

Monaco’s national dish is barbagiuan, a fried pastry filled with Swiss chard, ricotta and herbs, sold in bakeries and at the Marché de la Condamine, a covered market near the port with affordable food stalls. Also look for socca and fougasse monégasque, a sweet flatbread topped with anise seeds and almonds. Café terraces on Place du Casino are fun for people-watching but very expensive.

Tips for your port day

  • Use Monaco’s public elevators and escalators; they’re free and spare you the steepest climbs.
  • Eat at the Marché de la Condamine or a bakery for good, inexpensive food instead of the casino-area cafés.
  • Bring your passport or ID if you want to enter the casino gaming rooms, and dress smart-casual.
  • If you go to Nice or Èze, take the train or bus and watch the time; returning through Monaco’s traffic by taxi can be slow.
