Toulon cruise port guide
Toulon is France’s main naval base and a down-to-earth Provençal port with a lively old town, a cable car up Mont Faron and easy access to Bandol, Cassis, the Calanques and the island of Porquerolles. It’s less glamorous than the Riviera, which is exactly why many cruisers enjoy its local markets and uncrowded streets.

About Toulon
Toulon sits in one of the finest natural harbors in Europe, ringed by limestone hills and guarded by forts. Gray warships of the French Navy fill the inner basin, and the old town behind the harbor is a grid of fountains, plane-shaded squares and market streets with prices aimed at locals rather than tourists.
You can make a satisfying day of Toulon itself, riding the cable car to Mont Faron, browsing the Provençal market on Cours Lafayette and lunching on the waterfront. Many passengers use it as a gateway to Provence instead: the wine town of Bandol, the fishing port of Cassis and the Calanques, the island of Porquerolles or, on a long day, Aix-en-Provence. Travelers seeking postcard glamour may prefer Cannes or Villefranche.
Where cruise ships dock in Toulon
Depending on the ship, you’ll berth either near the city center or across the bay at La Seyne-sur-Mer. From the central berths, the old town and harbor front are a short walk. From La Seyne, cruise lines usually run shuttles, and the local harbor ferry boats (bateaux-bus) cross to Toulon’s waterfront in about 20 minutes, an inexpensive mini harbor cruise in itself. Toulon’s main sights can be seen in a half day. Cassis is about 45 minutes by road, and Aix-en-Provence roughly an hour.
Best things to do in Toulon on a cruise
- 1
Mont Faron cable car
scenery
A cable car climbs more than 1,600 feet (500 m) up the limestone mountain behind the city, giving a sweeping view over the harbor, the naval base and the coast. At the top, the Mémorial du Débarquement de Provence tells the story of the Allied landings in southern France in August 1944. The cable car stops in strong wind.
- 2
Cours Lafayette market and the old town
food
Toulon’s Provençal market fills Cours Lafayette in the mornings with olives, cheese, lavender, fruit and flowers. Wander the surrounding old town (Basse Ville), with its fountains, the Cathedral of Sainte-Marie-de-la-Seds and small squares lined with cafés.
- 3
National Navy Museum and harbor tour
history
The Musée national de la Marine, by the harbor, displays ship models, figureheads and naval paintings. Afterward, take a narrated boat trip around the roadstead to see the warships, forts and the coastline from the water.
- 4
Le Mourillon beaches
beach
East of the center, the Mourillon district has a series of sheltered, sandy coves protected by breakwaters, with calm water and casual seafood restaurants. It’s a short bus or taxi ride and good for a swim on a hot afternoon.
- 5
Porquerolles island
nature
The largest of the Golden Isles is a car-free nature reserve of pine woods, vineyards and white-sand beaches like Plage Notre-Dame. Ferries leave from La Tour Fondue near Hyères, about 40 minutes from Toulon by road, and the crossing takes about 20 minutes. Rent a bike on arrival.
- 6
Cassis and the Calanques
nature
About 45 minutes west, Cassis is a colorful fishing port below Cap Canaille, one of the highest sea cliffs in France. Boats from the harbor visit the nearby calanques, narrow limestone inlets with turquoise water, and the local white wine is a fine lunch companion.

What to eat and drink in Toulon
Try cade, Toulon’s version of a chickpea flatbread, sold hot by the slice in the market, and chichi frégi, sugar-dusted fried dough. Seafood restaurants around the port and in Le Mourillon serve bouillabaisse and grilled fish. Bandol, just along the coast, produces some of Provence’s most respected rosé and red wines, so order a glass with lunch.
Tips for your port day
- Check whether your ship berths in Toulon or La Seyne-sur-Mer, and note the shuttle or ferry times before you set off.
- The Cours Lafayette market winds down around midday, so go early.
- Mont Faron’s cable car closes in high wind, which is common when the mistral blows. Have a backup plan.
- If you go to Porquerolles independently, confirm return ferry times; the island is a long way from the ship if you miss the boat.
