Puntarenas cruise port guide
Puntarenas is Costa Rica's main Pacific cruise port, a laid-back town on a long, narrow sandspit in the Gulf of Nicoya. Ships tie up at a long pier that leads straight onto the beachfront promenade, and most visitors head inland for wildlife: scarlet macaws in Carara National Park, crocodiles on the Tárcoles River, rainforest ziplines and sloth-spotting tours.

About Puntarenas
Puntarenas itself is a simple port town with a beachfront walk, seafood stalls and a slightly faded charm. The real draw is Costa Rica's famous nature, and from here you can reach tropical forests, rivers and wildlife reserves in about an hour.
A typical day is an excursion: a crocodile boat safari on the Tárcoles River combined with a walk through Carara to look for macaws and monkeys, a canopy zipline, or a catamaran trip to the beaches of Isla Tortuga. Back in town, cruisers stroll the Paseo de los Turistas and cool off with a churchill, Puntarenas' signature shaved-ice dessert.
It's a great port for nature lovers, birders, families and adventure seekers. If you want a pretty colonial town to wander or a beautiful beach right off the ship, Puntarenas will underwhelm; the town beach is grayish and the gulf water isn't especially clear.
Where cruise ships dock in Puntarenas
Ships dock at the long cruise pier that juts out from the Puntarenas peninsula, so there's no tendering. Walk the length of the pier, which can take several minutes, and you arrive directly on the Paseo de los Turistas, the beachfront promenade, with craft stalls and cafés. The compact town center is a short walk away. Tours and taxis gather at the head of the pier. Carara National Park and the Tárcoles River are about an hour south, San José roughly two hours, and Monteverde two and a half hours or more. Some itineraries use the nearby port of Caldera instead, about 20 minutes south.
Best things to do in Puntarenas on a cruise
- 1
Tárcoles River crocodile tour
wildlife
The Tárcoles River is home to a large population of American crocodiles, some of them huge. Boat tours glide close to riverbanks where crocodiles bask, and guides point out herons, kingfishers and roseate spoonbills. It's often combined with Carara National Park on a half-day excursion.
- 2
Carara National Park
nature
Where dry and wet forest meet, Carara is one of the best places in Costa Rica to see scarlet macaws, along with monkeys, coatis and many other birds. Easy, flat trails make it accessible for most visitors. Go with a naturalist guide carrying a spotting scope for the best sightings.
- 3
Zipline canopy tour
adventure
Costa Rica popularized the canopy tour, and several parks within reach of Puntarenas string ziplines between platforms high in the forest. Tours typically include a safety briefing and a series of lines and take a half day including transport.
- 4
Isla Tortuga catamaran trip
beach
Catamarans sail across the Gulf of Nicoya to Isla Tortuga, with white sand, palm trees and calm water for swimming and snorkeling. Dolphins are sometimes spotted on the way. It's a full-day trip with lunch, so watch the return time.
- 5
Paseo de los Turistas
culture
The beachfront promenade starts at the foot of the pier and runs along the gulf, lined with souvenir stands, snack bars and benches. Stroll it at the start or end of the day and buy a churchill from one of the stands.
- 6
Sloth and wildlife sanctuaries
family
Several wildlife rescue centers and private reserves within a short drive offer close views of sloths, toucans and other animals. Choose ones focused on rehabilitation rather than handling animals.

What to eat and drink in Puntarenas
Costa Rica's staple is the casado, a plate of rice, black beans, salad, plantain and a choice of meat or fish, while gallo pinto (rice and beans) is the classic breakfast. Puntarenas is famous for the churchill, shaved ice layered with syrup, condensed milk, powdered milk and ice cream. Fresh ceviche and fried fish are sold along the promenade. Imperial is the local beer, and Costa Rican coffee is a great souvenir.
Tips for your port day
- Wear lightweight, quick-drying clothes, insect repellent and sunscreen; it's hot and humid, with afternoon rain in the green season.
- The walk along the pier is long; allow extra time getting back to the ship.
- U.S. dollars are widely accepted, but carry small bills since change may come in colones.
- Book wildlife tours with a certified naturalist guide; they spot far more than you would alone.
- Skip the long trips to Monteverde or Manuel Antonio unless your port day is very long.

A combined Tárcoles River crocodile tour and Carara National Park walk is the most popular, offering crocodiles, scarlet macaws and monkeys in a half day.

About two hours by road. It's doable on a long port day, but most cruisers prefer nature tours closer to the port.
