Colón cruise port guide
Colón is Panama's Caribbean cruise port at the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal. The city itself isn't a place to wander, but excursions from the cruise terminals reach the canal's Agua Clara and Gatún locks, the Panama Canal Railway, rainforest on Gatún Lake and the Spanish colonial forts of Portobelo and San Lorenzo.

About Colón
Colón is a gritty port city that grew up with the railroad and the canal. Most cruise visitors see it only on the way from the terminal to an excursion, and that's fine: the reason to stop here is the canal and the forests and forts around it, all within about an hour's drive.
Popular days include watching giant container ships pass through the Agua Clara Locks of the expanded canal, riding the Panama Canal Railway along the waterway to Panama City, boating on Gatún Lake in search of monkeys, or visiting the UNESCO-listed fortifications at Portobelo. Some ships make a partial canal transit, sailing through the Gatún Locks into the lake before returning.
It's an excellent port for canal enthusiasts, history lovers and rainforest wildlife fans who are happy to take a tour. It's not a port for independent wandering; set your expectations for an organized day rather than a stroll into town.
Where cruise ships dock in Colón
Ships dock at one of Colón's cruise terminals, most commonly Colón 2000 near the city center, so there's no tendering. The terminal has duty-free shops, a craft market, cafés and taxis, but the surrounding city is not recommended for walking. Excursions leave directly from the terminal: Agua Clara Locks is about 20 to 30 minutes away, Portobelo roughly an hour, and Gamboa and the Gatún Lake rainforest about an hour. Ship's tours are the simplest choice, and licensed taxis at the terminal can be hired for private trips. On partial-transit itineraries, the ship may drop off excursion guests by tender in Gatún Lake.
Best things to do in Colón on a cruise
- 1
Agua Clara Locks visitor center
history
Opened with the canal expansion in 2016, the Agua Clara Locks handle the largest ships to use the canal. The visitor center has a viewing terrace over the chambers and exhibits on the expansion. Seeing a neo-Panamax container ship slide through is a highlight of many Panama cruises.
- 2
Panama Canal Railway
scenery
Built on the route of the 19th-century Panama Railroad, the line runs alongside the canal and through rainforest between Colón and Panama City in about an hour. Cruise excursions often combine a one-way train ride with a coach and a stop at the locks. Departures are limited, so it usually has to be booked through the ship.
- 3
Gatún Lake rainforest boat tour
wildlife
Boats explore the forested inlets and islands of Gatún Lake, looking for howler and capuchin monkeys, sloths, crocodiles and toucans while passing ships transiting the canal. Some tours start near Gamboa, a former canal town surrounded by Soberanía National Park.
- 4
Portobelo forts
history
Portobelo was a key Spanish treasure port, and its ruined forts and cannon batteries are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town's church holds the revered Black Christ statue. It's about an hour from Colón along the Caribbean coast.
- 5
Fort San Lorenzo
history
Perched on a cliff at the mouth of the Chagres River, this Spanish fort, also part of the UNESCO site, offers sweeping views of the Caribbean and the river. Getting there involves a drive through protected forest, where wildlife sightings are common.
- 6
Emberá community visit
culture
Some tours travel by dugout canoe to Emberá villages along the Chagres River, where communities share music, crafts and traditional food. It's a long but rewarding day for culturally curious travelers.

What to eat and drink in Colón
Colón's food reflects its Afro-Caribbean roots: try coconut rice, rice and beans cooked in coconut milk, fried fish and patacones. Sancocho, Panama's chicken soup, is common across the country. Excursions often include a local lunch, which is the easiest way to sample the cuisine safely. Panama's coffee and Seco Herrerano, a sugarcane spirit, make good souvenirs.
