About Bilbao

Bilbao transformed itself from an industrial port into a design and culture destination after the Guggenheim opened in 1997. Today the riverside is lined with modern architecture and parks, while the Casco Viejo, the old town, is packed with pintxos bars, where small snacks are lined up on counters.

Most cruisers combine the Guggenheim with the old town and a pintxos crawl. Others head to San Sebastián, about 1.25 hours away, for its beach and food scene, or to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a hermitage on a rocky islet reached by a long stone stairway. The Basque Country suits food lovers, architecture fans and those curious about its distinctive culture and language.

Where cruise ships dock in Bilbao

Ships dock at the mouth of the Bilbao estuary, usually at the Getxo cruise terminal; larger ships sometimes berth in the port at Santurtzi across the water. Bilbao’s center is about 9 miles (14 km) away, roughly 25–40 minutes by shuttle, taxi or the Bilbao Metro, which has stations within walking distance of Getxo. Near Getxo, the Vizcaya Bridge, the world’s oldest transporter bridge, links Getxo and Portugalete. San Sebastián is about 1.25 hours by road, and San Juan de Gaztelugatxe about 45 minutes.

Best things to do in Bilbao on a cruise

  1. 1

    Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

    culture

Frank Gehry’s curving titanium building is as much an attraction as the modern art inside. Outside, look for Jeff Koons’ giant flower-covered Puppy and Louise Bourgeois’ spider sculpture, Maman. Book timed tickets in advance on busy days.

  2. 2

    Casco Viejo and pintxos

    food

Bilbao’s old town, the Siete Calles (Seven Streets), is full of bars with pintxos lined up on the counter. Plaza Nueva, an arcaded square, is a favorite spot. Order a few pintxos and a glass of txakoli at each bar, then move on.

  3. 3

    Mercado de la Ribera

    food

On the riverbank in the old town, this large covered market sells seafood, meat, cheese and produce, with a pintxos area for tasting. It’s a lively place to see local food culture.

  4. 4

    Vizcaya Bridge

    history

Built in 1893 and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this transporter bridge carries cars and passengers across the river in a gondola suspended from a high steel frame. You can also walk across the top walkway for views.

  5. 5

    San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

    scenery

A small hermitage perches on a rocky islet joined to the coast by a stone bridge and a long stairway, used as a filming location for Game of Thrones. Visits may require a free advance reservation in busy periods, and the climb back up is steep.

  6. 6

    San Sebastián

    food

About 1.25 hours away, San Sebastián’s La Concha beach curves around a scenic bay, and its old town is one of the world’s great food destinations, known for pintxos bars and Basque cheesecake. It’s a popular full-day excursion.

What to eat and drink in Bilbao

Pintxos are the heart of Basque food: try the gilda (anchovy, olive and pickled pepper on a skewer), bacalao al pil-pil (salt cod in an emulsified garlic sauce) and marmitako, a tuna and potato stew. Idiazabal is a smoky sheep’s cheese. Txakoli, a slightly sparkling white wine, is poured from a height. San Sebastián is credited with Basque burnt cheesecake.

Tips for your port day

  • Pintxos etiquette: point to what you want or take it yourself if invited, keep track of what you eat and pay at the end.
  • Book Guggenheim tickets ahead when several ships are in port.
  • The metro is an easy, inexpensive way into the city from Getxo; check which station is closest to your berth.
  • Check whether San Juan de Gaztelugatxe requires a reservation for your date, and wear sturdy shoes for the stairs.
