About Kochi

For centuries, traders from Arabia, China, Portugal, the Netherlands and Britain came to Kochi for pepper, cardamom and other spices, and each left their mark. Fort Kochi and Mattancherry are a layered, walkable mix of Portuguese churches, Dutch colonial houses, a centuries-old synagogue, mosques and Hindu temples, all along shady streets lined with spice warehouses and art cafés.

Kochi is gentler than India’s big northern cities, and many cruisers find it an easy introduction to the country. A typical port day covers Fort Kochi’s seafront and churches, Mattancherry’s palace and Jew Town, then perhaps a Kathakali makeup demonstration or a backwater boat ride.

It’s a great fit for history lovers, foodies and photographers. Heat and humidity are constant, so it’s best for travelers who are comfortable with a slower, warmer pace.

Where cruise ships dock in Kochi

Cruise ships berth at the cruise terminal on Willingdon Island, a man-made island in Kochi’s harbor. Fort Kochi is about 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or auto-rickshaw, and Mattancherry a few minutes further. Public ferries also cross the harbor. Ernakulam, the modern city center, is around 20 to 30 minutes away. The backwaters at Alappuzha (Alleppey) are about 1.5 hours each way, while closer village backwater trips are available near Kochi. Fort Kochi and Mattancherry fill a relaxed half-day.

Best things to do in Kochi on a cruise

  1. 1

    Chinese fishing nets

    culture

Giant cantilevered nets line the Fort Kochi waterfront, raised and lowered by teams of fishermen using counterweights of stone. They’re thought to have been introduced by traders from China centuries ago. Fishermen sometimes invite visitors to help, usually for a tip.

  2. 2

    Paradesi Synagogue and Jew Town

    history

Built in 1568, the Paradesi Synagogue is among the oldest active synagogues in the Commonwealth, with hand-painted Chinese floor tiles and glass chandeliers. The surrounding Jew Town lanes are lined with antique, spice and craft shops. The synagogue closes on certain days, so check before visiting.

  3. 3

    Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace)

    history

Built by the Portuguese and later renovated by the Dutch, this palace was presented to the Rajas of Kochi. Its highlight is a series of remarkable Kerala-style murals depicting Hindu epics, along with royal costumes and palanquins.

  4. 4

    St. Francis Church

    history

One of the oldest European-built churches in India, St. Francis Church was the original burial place of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama before his remains were moved to Portugal. It’s a simple, peaceful building on a leafy square in Fort Kochi.

  5. 5

    Kerala backwaters

    nature

A network of lagoons, rivers and canals lined with coconut palms and villages. From Kochi, ship tours either drive to Alappuzha for a traditional kettuvallam houseboat ride or visit closer village backwaters by small canoe. It’s a gentle, scenic experience of rural Kerala.

  6. 6

    Kathakali performance

    culture

Kerala’s classical dance-drama features elaborate costumes and painted faces that take hours to apply. Theaters in Fort Kochi offer shows with makeup demonstrations, usually in the late afternoon or evening; some ship tours arrange shorter daytime performances.

What to eat and drink in Kochi

Kerala cuisine is built on coconut, curry leaves, tamarind and spice. Try meen curry, fish in a tangy red sauce; karimeen pollichathu, pearl spot fish cooked in banana leaf; and appam, lacy rice pancakes, with vegetable or chicken stew. A sadya, a vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf, is a highlight if you can find one. Snack on banana chips fried in coconut oil, and finish with strong South Indian filter coffee. Spice shops in Mattancherry sell pepper, cardamom and cinnamon to take home.

Tips for your port day

  • US and Canadian citizens need an Indian visa, usually the e-Visa, arranged before your cruise; follow your line’s instructions.
  • Auto-rickshaws are handy for short hops; agree on the fare first, and be wary of drivers who push detours to shops.
  • Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, especially at churches, the synagogue and temples.
  • Kochi is hot and humid year-round; start early, carry water and plan shady café breaks.
  • Buy spices from established shops and ask for sealed packaging, and check your next ports’ and home country’s food import rules.
