About Colombo

Colombo has been a trading port for centuries, shaped by Arab merchants and then Portuguese, Dutch and British rule. The result is a mix of Buddhist temples, mosques, Hindu kovils and colonial buildings, set around Beira Lake and a seafront promenade. Recent years have added gleaming towers, including the striking Lotus Tower with its observation deck.

A port day usually covers the city highlights: the eclectic Gangaramaya Temple and its lakeside Seema Malaka, the Pettah bazaar and Red Mosque, the Old Dutch Hospital’s restaurants, and a stroll on Galle Face Green. Galle Fort, about 1.5 to 2 hours away by expressway, is the main long excursion.

Colombo suits travelers curious about South Asian culture and food. It’s hot, humid and noisy, and the port area itself isn’t pedestrian-friendly, so a tour or driver makes the day easier.

Where cruise ships dock in Colombo

Ships berth inside the Port of Colombo, a busy container port, and passengers typically take a shuttle bus to the port gate, since walking within the port isn’t allowed. The gate opens onto the Fort district, with Pettah’s markets and the Red Mosque a short tuk-tuk ride away. Gangaramaya Temple and Galle Face Green are about 10 to 15 minutes by road. Galle Fort is roughly 1.5 to 2 hours each way via the Southern Expressway. Kandy is too far to visit comfortably in a typical port day.

Best things to do in Colombo on a cruise

  1. 1

    Gangaramaya Temple and Seema Malaka

    culture

Gangaramaya is a wonderfully eclectic Buddhist temple packed with statues, relics, vintage cars and gifts from devotees. Nearby, the Seema Malaka meditation pavilion floats on Beira Lake, designed by famed Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. Cover shoulders and knees and remove shoes and hats.

  2. 2

Pettah Market and the Red Mosque

    shopping

Pettah is a maze of crowded streets, each specializing in goods from spices and textiles to electronics. In its midst stands the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, known as the Red Mosque for its red-and-white striped facade. It’s hectic, so keep belongings secure.

  3. 3

    Galle Face Green

    culture

A long oceanfront promenade where families fly kites and vendors sell isso vadai, prawn fritters, especially around sunset. The grand Galle Face Hotel at the southern end is a classic spot for a drink with a sea view.

  4. 4

    Old Dutch Hospital

    food

One of Colombo’s oldest colonial buildings, restored into a courtyard of restaurants, cafés and boutiques in the Fort district. It’s a comfortable, convenient place for lunch close to the port.

  5. 5

    Galle Fort

    history

A UNESCO-listed fortified town on the south coast, built by the Portuguese and expanded by the Dutch. Walk the ramparts, lighthouse and lanes of colonial houses filled with cafés and boutiques. It’s a long day, best booked as a tour.

  6. 6

    Lotus Tower

    scenery

Shaped like a lotus bud, this tower is among the tallest structures in South Asia, with an observation deck offering sweeping views over the city, lake and ocean. It’s a modern counterpoint to Colombo’s colonial sights.

What to eat and drink in Colombo

Sri Lankan rice and curry, a spread of several small curries with rice, is the everyday meal. Try kottu roti, chopped flatbread stir-fried with vegetables and meat on a clanging griddle; hoppers, bowl-shaped rice pancakes often cooked with an egg inside; and string hoppers with coconut sambol. Lamprais, rice and curry baked in banana leaf, reflects Dutch Burgher heritage. Seafood is excellent, especially crab. Drink Ceylon tea, fresh king coconut water or a Lion lager.

Tips for your port day

  • Sri Lanka requires an electronic travel authorization for most visitors, and its rules have changed several times; check requirements with your cruise line.
  • Use app-based tuk-tuks or taxis such as PickMe or Uber, or agree on prices first; ignore strangers offering help or tours near the port gate.
  • At Buddhist sites, cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes and hats, and never pose with your back to a Buddha statue; visible Buddha tattoos can cause offense.
  • Watch out for gem scams and “special sale” offers; buy only from reputable stores with certificates.
  • Bring water, sunscreen and a hat; Colombo is hot and humid year-round, with monsoon showers at certain times of year.
