About Penang

George Town was founded as a British trading post in 1786, and Malay, Chinese, Indian and European communities built it into a crossroads city. You can walk from a Chinese clan house to a mosque, a Hindu temple and an Anglican church in a few minutes, and the old shophouse streets are packed with cafés, crafts and murals.

Penang is also Malaysia’s street-food capital. Many visitors plan their day around meals, grazing on char kway teow, assam laksa and cendol between sights. With the pier right in town, it’s an excellent port to explore on your own.

It suits food lovers, culture seekers and walkers. It’s hot and humid year-round, so pace yourself, and beach-focused travelers may find Batu Ferringhi underwhelming compared with Thai islands.

Where cruise ships dock in Penang

Ships dock at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal on the edge of George Town’s heritage core. Fort Cornwallis is about 5 to 10 minutes on foot, and Armenian Street, the clan jetties and Little India are 10 to 15 minutes away. Trishaws, taxis and Grab are easy to find. Kek Lok Si and Penang Hill are about 30 minutes by car, and Batu Ferringhi beach about 40 minutes. George Town’s highlights can be covered in half a day on foot; add a few hours for the hill and temple.

Best things to do in Penang on a cruise

  1. 1

    George Town street art

    culture

Murals by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic, including the much-photographed Children on a Bicycle on Armenian Street, launched a street-art trail across the old town. Wrought-iron caricatures on building walls also explain local history and street names. Pick up a map and wander.

  2. 2

    Khoo Kongsi

    history

The most elaborate of Penang’s Chinese clan houses, with an ornately carved and gilded temple hall set in a hidden courtyard. A small museum explains how clan associations supported immigrants. It’s a short walk from the pier.

  3. 3

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (Blue Mansion)

    history

A striking indigo-blue mansion built for a wealthy merchant in the late 19th century, blending Chinese feng shui with European touches. Visits are by guided tour, which tells colorful stories about the house and its owner.

  4. 4

    Clan Jetties

    culture

Wooden stilt villages built over the water by Chinese clans, still home to families today. Chew Jetty is the busiest, with small shops along the boardwalk. Remember that people live here, so be respectful when taking photos.

  5. 5

    Kek Lok Si Temple

    culture

One of Southeast Asia’s largest Buddhist temple complexes climbs a hillside at Air Itam, topped by a towering bronze statue of Kuan Yin, the goddess of mercy. The seven-tiered pagoda mixes Chinese, Thai and Burmese styles.

  6. 6

    Penang Hill

    scenery

A funicular railway climbs the hill to a cooler summit with gardens, colonial bungalows and views across George Town to the mainland. Lines can be long on weekends and holidays, so go early.

  7. 7

Little India and Kapitan Keling Mosque

    culture

Little India’s streets are full of spice shops, sari stores and Bollywood music. Nearby, the Kapitan Keling Mosque, with its Moorish domes, is open to respectfully dressed visitors outside prayer times; robes are typically provided.

What to eat and drink in Penang

Penang’s hawker food is legendary. Essentials include char kway teow, flat rice noodles wok-fried with prawns and cockles; assam laksa, a sour, spicy fish-based noodle soup; Hokkien mee, a prawn broth noodle soup; and nasi kandar, rice with a mix of curries. For dessert, try cendol, shaved ice with coconut milk and palm sugar. Hawker centers and coffee shops around George Town serve all of these at low cost, and nutmeg juice is a local refresher.

Tips for your port day

  • Walk the heritage core early in the morning before the heat builds, and save air-conditioned museums for midday.
  • Use Grab for longer trips such as Kek Lok Si and Penang Hill; it’s inexpensive and avoids fare haggling.
  • Cover shoulders and knees for mosques and temples, and remove shoes where asked.
  • Many hawker stalls are cash only and specialize in one dish; order from several and share.
  • If you take a trishaw tour, agree on the route and price before you set off.
