About Busan
Busan wraps around a series of bays and mountains on Korea’s southeastern tip. During the Korean War it was a refugee city and temporary capital, and you can still see that history in the steep neighborhoods that refugees built and in the UN Memorial Cemetery, which holds soldiers from Canada and other allied countries.
Today it’s a confident, outdoorsy city. In a single port day you can wander the painted alleys of Gamcheon, eat raw fish at Jagalchi, visit a temple perched on sea rocks and stroll Haeundae Beach. The subway is clean, cheap and signed in English, so independent exploring is very doable.
Busan suits active travelers and food lovers. Expect lots of walking and stairs, since Gamcheon and the temples are hillside or clifftop sites; travelers with limited mobility may prefer a ship tour with coach drop-offs.
Where cruise ships dock in Busan
Ships use either the Busan Port International Passenger Terminal, next to Busan Station in the city center, or the Yeongdo International Cruise Terminal on Yeongdo island, which is farther out and usually served by shuttles or taxis. From the city terminal, Nampo-dong, Jagalchi Market and Gukje Market are about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi or a few subway stops. Gamcheon Culture Village is roughly 20 to 30 minutes by taxi, Haeundae Beach about 30 to 40 minutes, and Haedong Yonggungsa around 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic.
Best things to do in Busan on a cruise
- 1
Gamcheon Culture Village
culture
A hillside neighborhood of pastel houses built by refugees, now filled with murals, art installations and small cafés. Buy the stamp map, follow the fish-shaped signs, and look for the Little Prince statue overlooking the rooftops. It’s a residential area, so keep noise down.
- 2
Jagalchi Fish Market
food
Korea’s best-known seafood market sprawls along the harbor in Nampo-dong. Pick live fish, crab or abalone downstairs, and restaurants upstairs will prepare it as sashimi, grilled or in a spicy stew. Even if you don’t eat, the stalls and vendors are fascinating.
- 3
Haedong Yonggungsa Temple
culture
Unusually for Korea, this Buddhist temple sits right on the rocky coast, with waves crashing below its pavilions. It’s photogenic and popular, so expect crowds and steps. It’s on the city’s northeastern edge, so pair it with Haeundae Beach.
- 4
UN Memorial Cemetery in Korea
history
The only United Nations cemetery in the world honors soldiers who died in the Korean War, including Canadians, Americans and many other nationalities. The grounds are peaceful and immaculately kept, with memorials for each country. It’s a meaningful stop for North American visitors.
- 5
Haeundae Beach and Blue Line Park
beach
Haeundae is Korea’s most famous city beach, a wide sweep of sand backed by high-rises. Nearby Blue Line Park runs a coastal rail line and small elevated sky capsules along the shore between Mipo and Songjeong, a relaxing way to see the coast.
- 6
Gukje Market and BIFF Square
shopping
A sprawling traditional market of clothing, housewares and food stalls next to Nampo-dong. At BIFF Square nearby, vendors sell ssiat hotteok, a crispy pancake stuffed with brown sugar and seeds. It’s an easy area to explore close to the city terminal.

What to eat and drink in Busan
Busan’s signature dish is dwaeji gukbap, a milky pork-and-rice soup served with chives and fermented shrimp. Milmyeon, chilled wheat noodles in a tangy broth, is the summer favorite. At Jagalchi, try raw fish, grilled eel or spicy seafood stew. Street snacks include eomuk fish cakes, which Busan is known for, and ssiat hotteok. Wash it down with soju or makgeolli, a lightly sparkling rice wine.
Tips for your port day
- Check which terminal your ship uses; Yeongdo is farther from the subway, so plan on a shuttle or taxi.
- Buy a T-money card at a convenience store for the subway and buses; it’s rechargeable and saves time.
- Use a Korean map app such as Naver Map or KakaoMap for directions; global map apps can be less reliable in Korea.
- Gamcheon and Haedong Yonggungsa involve steep slopes and many stairs, so wear comfortable shoes.
- Group sights by area: Nampo-dong, Jagalchi and Gamcheon on one side, Haeundae and Haedong Yonggungsa on the other.
