Phuket cruise port guide

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and a classic tender stop, with ships usually anchoring off Patong Beach. The big draws are boat trips among the limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay, snorkeling around the Phi Phi Islands, the hilltop Big Buddha, Wat Chalong temple and the colorful shophouses of Old Phuket Town.

About Phuket

Phuket sits in the Andaman Sea off Thailand’s southwest coast, ringed by beaches and backed by jungle-covered hills. It’s one of Asia’s most developed resort islands, so expect plenty of tourist infrastructure, traffic and touts, but also excellent food, warm water and some of the region’s most dramatic seascapes just offshore.

Many cruisers book a boat trip: either sea-canoeing through hidden lagoons in Phang Nga Bay, past the famous “James Bond Island,” or a speedboat to the Phi Phi Islands. Others stay on land for temples, viewpoints and lunch in Old Phuket Town, where Sino-Portuguese shophouses recall the island’s tin-mining past.

Phuket is great for beach lovers, snorkelers and anyone wanting a first taste of Thailand. If you dislike crowds and nightlife, skip Patong and head for quieter Kata or Karon beaches.

Where cruise ships dock in Phuket

Phuket is usually a tender port: ships anchor in Patong Bay and run tenders to Patong Beach, putting you on the island’s busiest beach and nightlife strip. Some smaller ships dock at the deep-sea port near Phuket Town on the east coast, about 30 to 40 minutes from Patong. From Patong, Old Phuket Town and Wat Chalong are about 30 to 40 minutes by road, and the piers for Phang Nga Bay roughly an hour or more. Allow extra time for tender lines, especially on the way back.

Best things to do in Phuket on a cruise

  1. 1

    Phang Nga Bay

    nature

Towering limestone karsts rise straight out of emerald water. Tours often include sea-canoeing into hongs, collapsed caves open to the sky, and a stop at Khao Phing Kan, known as James Bond Island after The Man with the Golden Gun. It’s a full, long day, but one of the best excursions in Thailand.

  2. 2

    Phi Phi Islands

    beach

Speedboats run to these famous islands for snorkeling, beaches and dramatic cliffs. Maya Bay, made famous by the film The Beach, now limits visitor numbers, doesn’t allow swimming and closes for part of each year to help the reef recover. Seas can be rough during the monsoon months.

  3. 3

    Big Buddha

    culture

A huge white marble seated Buddha on Nakkerd Hill, visible from much of southern Phuket. The hilltop has wide views over Chalong Bay and Kata. Shoulders and knees must be covered; sarongs are available at the entrance.

  4. 4

    Wat Chalong

    culture

Phuket’s most important Buddhist temple complex, with ornate halls and a tall pagoda said to hold a relic of the Buddha. You may hear firecrackers set off by worshippers giving thanks. Dress modestly and remove shoes before entering buildings.

  5. 5

    Old Phuket Town

    history

Colorful Sino-Portuguese shophouses line Thalang Road and Soi Romanee, built in the tin-mining boom of the late 1800s. It’s a great area for cafés, street art, small museums and Phuket’s distinct Peranakan-influenced food. It feels a world away from Patong.

  6. 6

    Kata, Karon and Promthep Cape

    beach

South of Patong, Kata and Karon offer wide, calmer beaches with fewer touts. Continue to Promthep Cape at the island’s southern tip for sweeping sea views from the headland. Taxi or tour is the easiest way to combine them.

What to eat and drink in Phuket

Phuket’s food mixes Thai, Chinese and Malay influences. Try mee hokkien, thick yellow noodles stir-fried with seafood, and moo hong, black-pepper braised pork belly, both Old Town specialties. Southern Thai curries are spicier than in Bangkok. Classic Thai dishes such as tom yum goong, green curry and pad thai are everywhere, and fresh coconuts and mango sticky rice are easy to find. A cold Chang or Singha beer at a beach shack is part of the experience.

Tips for your port day

  • Agree on taxi and tuk-tuk fares before you get in, as Phuket’s fares are high; ride-hailing apps such as Grab are often easier.
  • Leave a generous buffer for the return tender; lines can be long in late afternoon.
  • Cover shoulders and knees at temples, and avoid touching monks or pointing your feet at Buddha images.
  • Choose ethical animal experiences: look for elephant sanctuaries that don’t offer riding or shows.
  • It’s hot and humid year-round, and the southwest monsoon from roughly May to October brings rougher seas that can affect tenders and boat trips.
