La Spezia cruise port guide
La Spezia is the cruise gateway to the Cinque Terre, five cliffside fishing villages linked by train, boat and hiking trails, with the nearest village about 10 minutes away by rail. It’s one of the easiest gateway ports to handle on your own, though summer crowds are heavy, and Portovenere, Pisa and Lucca are also within reach.

About La Spezia
La Spezia is a naval city at the head of the Gulf of Poets, so named because Byron and Shelley spent time on its shores. The town has a pleasant pedestrian center and waterfront park, but nearly everyone heads west to the Cinque Terre: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of terraced vineyards and pastel houses stacked above the sea.
A typical day means riding the train between two or three villages, perhaps hiking a short section of trail and returning by boat when the sea allows. Portovenere, at the tip of the gulf, is a quieter alternative. Be aware that the villages are tiny and very crowded in summer, and visiting involves stairs and steep lanes. Travelers with mobility limits may find Portovenere or a scenic boat trip more enjoyable.
Where cruise ships dock in La Spezia
Ships dock at the cruise terminal near the town center, and the waterfront and pedestrian streets are a short walk away. La Spezia Centrale train station is about 15–20 minutes on foot or a short shuttle or taxi ride. From there, Cinque Terre trains are frequent: Riomaggiore is about 10 minutes away and Monterosso about 25. In season and calm weather, ferries leave from the waterfront near the terminal for Portovenere and four of the villages (Corniglia has no harbor). Pisa and Lucca are about an hour away by road.
Best things to do in La Spezia on a cruise
- 1
Cinque Terre by train
scenery
The Cinque Terre Card covers unlimited regional trains between La Spezia and Levanto plus access to paid hiking trails, making hopping between villages simple. Pick two or three villages rather than trying for all five. Vernazza’s harbor and Manarola’s viewpoint are the classic photo stops.
- 2
Hiking the Blue Trail
adventure
The Sentiero Azzurro coastal path links the villages with steep, rocky sections and big sea views. Monterosso to Vernazza takes around two hours and is challenging. Trail sections close after storms, and the famous Via dell’Amore near Riomaggiore has limited access, so check status locally.
- 3
Boat trip along the coast
scenery
Ferries run from La Spezia along the coast to Portovenere and the Cinque Terre villages, giving the best view of the houses rising from the cliffs. Service depends on weather and sea conditions, so treat it as a bonus rather than your only way back.
- 4
Portovenere
history
At the entrance to the gulf, Portovenere has a row of tall, colorful harbor houses, the striped Gothic Church of San Pietro on a rocky point and Byron’s Grotto below. It’s part of the same UNESCO listing, about 30 minutes by bus or boat, and usually calmer than the Cinque Terre.
- 5
Monterosso al Mare
beach
The largest Cinque Terre village has the only real sandy beach, with rental umbrellas and calm water. Its old town is full of lemon and anchovy shops. It’s a good last stop before the train back.
- 6
Pisa and Lucca
history
If you’ve already seen the Cinque Terre, excursions head to Pisa’s Leaning Tower and Lucca’s walled old town, each about an hour from La Spezia. It’s a lower-intensity day with less climbing.

What to eat and drink in La Spezia
This is pesto country: order trofie or trenette al pesto, made with Ligurian basil. Focaccia from a bakery makes a perfect train snack, and farinata, a thin chickpea pancake, is a local classic. Monterosso is known for anchovies, served fried, marinated or stuffed. La Spezia’s own dishes include muscoli ripieni (stuffed mussels). Sciacchetrà, a rare sweet wine from the terraced vineyards, is worth a taste.
Tips for your port day
- Trains are frequent but packed in summer. Head out early and plan to be back in La Spezia at least an hour before you need to be on board.
- Wear proper walking shoes. Even without hiking, the villages are all stairs and steep lanes; Corniglia sits on a cliff above its station.
- Don’t rely on the ferry for your return. Sea conditions can cancel boats with little notice.
- A ship excursion makes sense if you want a guide and guaranteed return, but independent travel is straightforward here.
- Carry cash for small purchases and bring water; shade is limited on the trails.

La Spezia cruise FAQs
How do you get from La Spezia cruise port to the Cinque Terre?
Walk or take a shuttle to La Spezia Centrale station, then catch a regional train. Riomaggiore is about 10 minutes away and Monterosso about 25. Seasonal ferries also run from the waterfront.
Can you do the Cinque Terre on your own from a cruise ship?
Yes. It’s one of the easiest independent days in the Mediterranean thanks to frequent trains. Buy a Cinque Terre Card or train tickets and allow a buffer for crowded trains on the return.
How many Cinque Terre villages can you see in one port day?
Two or three comfortably. Trying to see all five usually means more time on platforms than in the villages.
Is the Cinque Terre good for people with limited mobility?
It’s challenging. The villages are built on steep slopes with many stairs. A scenic boat trip or a visit to Portovenere is more manageable.
Can you visit Florence from La Spezia?
Yes, but it’s about 1.5–2 hours each way, making for a very long day. Florence is usually easier from Livorno.
