Naples cruise port guide
Naples is a gloriously chaotic cruise port where ships dock in the heart of the city, steps from the Castel Nuovo and a short walk from the historic center’s pizzerias and churches. It’s also the gateway to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Mount Vesuvius, Sorrento, Capri and the Amalfi Coast, so the hardest part is choosing.

About Naples
Naples is loud, dense and intensely alive, with laundry strung across narrow alleys, scooters weaving through crowds and some of Italy’s greatest art and archaeology hidden behind grimy facades. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and this is the city that gave the world pizza.
With so much nearby, port days split into camps. History lovers head to Pompeii or Herculaneum, both buried by Vesuvius in AD 79. Hikers climb to the volcano’s crater. Others take a hydrofoil to Capri or Sorrento, or a long coach day along the Amalfi Coast. Staying in the city is just as rewarding if you enjoy street life, food and museums. Travelers who dislike crowds, noise and traffic may find Naples overwhelming.
Where cruise ships dock in Naples
Ships dock at the Stazione Marittima on Molo Angioino, right in the center beside the Castel Nuovo and Piazza Municipio. You can walk to the Royal Palace and Piazza del Plebiscito in about 10 minutes and to Spaccanapoli in 20–25. Hydrofoils to Capri and Sorrento leave from the neighboring Molo Beverello. For Pompeii, the Circumvesuviana commuter train from Garibaldi or Porta Nolana stations takes about 35–40 minutes, and a taxi or excursion takes a similar time by road. The Amalfi Coast is 1.5–2 hours away by road.
Best things to do in Naples on a cruise
- 1
Pompeii
history
The Roman city frozen by Vesuvius’s eruption in AD 79 covers a vast area of streets, villas, frescoes and the casts of victims. Plan at least three hours and wear sturdy shoes. Pompeii limits daily visitors and uses timed tickets, so book ahead in peak season or join an excursion.
- 2
Herculaneum
history
Smaller and better preserved than Pompeii, Herculaneum was buried under deep volcanic material that saved wooden beams, upper floors and vivid frescoes. It’s about 20 minutes from Naples and can be seen in two hours, making it ideal for a shorter port day.
- 3
Mount Vesuvius
adventure
Roads climb partway up the volcano, then a steep gravel path takes about 30 minutes to the crater rim, with views across the Bay of Naples. Tickets must be bought online in advance, and the trail closes in bad weather. It combines well with Pompeii on an excursion.
- 4
National Archaeological Museum (MANN)
history
Many of the best mosaics, frescoes and sculptures from Pompeii and Herculaneum are here, including the Alexander Mosaic, plus the enormous Farnese collection of classical statues. It’s a short taxi or metro ride from the port and essential if you visit the ruins.
- 5
Spaccanapoli and the historic center
culture
The long, straight street nicknamed Spaccanapoli cuts through the old city past churches, palaces and shrines. Detour to Via San Gregorio Armeno, lined with workshops making nativity figures, and to the Cappella Sansevero for the Veiled Christ, a marble sculpture of astonishing delicacy. Book Sansevero in advance.
- 6
Naples Underground
adventure
Guided tours of Napoli Sotterranea descend beneath the old town into Greek-era quarries, Roman aqueducts and World War II air-raid shelters. Some passages are very narrow and lit only by candle, so it’s not for the claustrophobic.

What to eat and drink in Naples
Pizza napoletana is the main event: a soft, blistered crust with simple toppings. L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele and Gino Sorbillo on Via dei Tribunali are famous names with lines to match. Try pizza fritta (fried, stuffed pizza), a cuoppo (paper cone of fried seafood) and sfogliatella, a crisp shell-shaped pastry filled with ricotta. Finish with rum-soaked babà and a short, strong espresso at a stand-up bar. Limoncello comes from the nearby Sorrento peninsula.
Tips for your port day
- Pickpockets are active on the Circumvesuviana, in crowded streets and near the station. Use a cross-body bag and keep your phone in a front pocket.
- Book Pompeii, Vesuvius and Cappella Sansevero tickets ahead in high season, or let a ship excursion handle them.
- Allow a big buffer on independent trips to Pompeii or Capri. Trains can be delayed and hydrofoils fill up for the return.
- Cross streets with care; scooters often ignore crossings. Walk with purpose and make eye contact with drivers.
- Carry some cash for pizzerias and small cafés.

Yes. The terminal is right in the center. Piazza del Plebiscito is about 10 minutes’ walk, and the historic center about 20–25 minutes.
Is Naples safe for cruise passengers?
Yes, for normal sightseeing, but petty theft is a real risk. Watch your bags in crowds and on public transport, and avoid flashing expensive jewelry or phones.
Pompeii or Herculaneum: which is better on a cruise?
Pompeii is bigger and more famous; Herculaneum is closer to Naples, better preserved and quicker to see. With limited time or mobility, Herculaneum is often the smarter choice.
