About Salerno

Salerno often gets overlooked in favor of its glamorous neighbors, but it’s a pleasant, unpretentious city at the eastern end of the Amalfi Coast. Its long, palm-lined Lungomare is perfect for a stroll, and the medieval old town hides a striking cathedral and one of Europe’s earliest medical schools.

Most cruisers head straight for the Amalfi Coast, where Amalfi, Positano and Ravello cling to cliffs above the sea. Others choose the beautifully preserved Greek temples at Paestum, a less crowded alternative to Pompeii, or Pompeii itself. Staying in town suits anyone who wants a slow day with good food and a seaside walk. Travelers prone to motion sickness should know the Amalfi road is famously winding.

Where cruise ships dock in Salerno

Ships dock at the port near the city center, many at or near the Stazione Marittima, a futuristic cruise terminal designed by Zaha Hadid. The Lungomare and old town are a short walk away. In season, ferries to Amalfi (about 35 minutes) and Positano (around 1 hour or more) leave from the waterfront close to the cruise berths, a calmer alternative to the clifftop road. Paestum is about 45 minutes south by road or a short regional train ride, and Pompeii is around 30–40 minutes by road.

Best things to do in Salerno on a cruise

  1. 1

    Amalfi by ferry

    scenery

Seeing the Amalfi Coast from the sea is spectacular and avoids traffic. In Amalfi, climb the steps to the striped Cathedral of Sant’Andrea, browse lemon and paper shops, and wander the lanes above the harbor. Ferries depend on weather and season, so confirm return times.

  2. 2

    Positano

    scenery

Positano’s pastel houses spill down a steep hillside to a pebble beach. It’s all stairs and narrow lanes, filled with boutiques selling linen and ceramics. Reachable by ferry or road, it’s best paired with Amalfi on a full-day excursion.

  3. 3

    Ravello

    scenery

Perched high above Amalfi, Ravello is quieter and famously elegant. Villa Rufolo’s gardens inspired Wagner, and the Terrace of Infinity at Villa Cimbrone offers one of the most celebrated views on the coast. Reach it by bus or taxi from Amalfi.

  4. 4

    Paestum

    history

Three magnificent Doric temples, among the best-preserved Greek temples anywhere, stand in open fields about 45 minutes south of Salerno. The museum displays the Tomb of the Diver, a rare Greek fresco. It’s rarely as crowded as Pompeii.

  5. 5

    Salerno Cathedral

    history

The cathedral, founded in the 11th century, is dedicated to St. Matthew, and its crypt, glittering with marble and frescoes, is said to hold the apostle’s relics. Enter through a colonnaded courtyard and bronze doors made in Constantinople.

  6. 6

    Lungomare and Giardino della Minerva

    nature

Stroll the seafront Lungomare Trieste, then climb into the old town to the Giardino della Minerva, a terraced medieval garden of medicinal plants linked to the Schola Medica Salernitana, one of Europe’s first medical schools.

What to eat and drink in Salerno

Buffalo mozzarella from the plains around Paestum is a must; look for shops and farms selling it fresh. Scialatielli ai frutti di mare, thick fresh pasta with seafood, is a coast classic. Colatura di alici, an anchovy sauce from nearby Cetara, flavors spaghetti. Amalfi’s sfusato lemons go into limoncello and delizia al limone, a lemon-cream sponge cake. The old town’s Via dei Mercanti has casual trattorias and pizzerias.

Tips for your port day

  • Use the ferry for Amalfi and Positano when it’s running; it’s quicker and calmer than the road in summer.
  • Ferries can be canceled in rough seas, so have a road backup or choose a ship excursion with a guaranteed return.
  • Paestum makes a quieter alternative to Pompeii, especially in midsummer.
  • The Amalfi Coast road is narrow and winding. Take motion sickness precautions and sit near the front of the coach.
