About Sorrento
Sorrento sits on top of sheer tufa cliffs, with its old town of narrow lanes, churches and workshops spreading back from Piazza Tasso. Below, the small harbors of Marina Piccola and Marina Grande cling to the base of the cliff, and the bay stretches across to Naples and Vesuvius.
Many cruisers use Sorrento as a jumping-off point: the Amalfi Coast drive to Positano and Amalfi, the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, or a ferry hop to Capri. Staying in town is a pleasant option too, with shopping for inlaid woodwork and lemon products, and seafood lunches at Marina Grande. It’s less suited to travelers who dislike crowds, as the town fills with day visitors in summer.
Where cruise ships dock in Sorrento
Sorrento is a tender port. Ships anchor in the bay and tenders land at Marina Piccola, at the foot of the cliffs. From there, the town is reached by a steep stairway and road, local buses or a public elevator near the Villa Comunale gardens, and it’s about 10 minutes to Piazza Tasso. The Circumvesuviana train station is roughly 10 minutes’ walk from the piazza; trains to Pompeii take about 30 minutes. Ferries to Capri leave from Marina Piccola and take about 20–30 minutes. Positano is roughly 45–60 minutes by road.
Best things to do in Sorrento on a cruise
- 1
Amalfi Coast drive
scenery
The coastal road from Sorrento to Positano and Amalfi twists along cliffs high above the sea, with pastel towns tumbling to the water. A ship excursion or private driver is the easiest option; public SITA buses are inexpensive but often packed, and traffic can be slow in summer.
- 2
Pompeii
history
The Roman city buried by Vesuvius in AD 79 is about 30 minutes away by Circumvesuviana train or road. Plan at least two to three hours inside, book timed entry in busy months and bring water and a hat, as there’s little shade.
- 3
Capri
scenery
Ferries and hydrofoils from Marina Piccola reach Capri in about 20–30 minutes, making the island an easy addition. Head up to the Piazzetta by funicular or take a boat tour around the coast. Allow plenty of time for return boats.
- 4
Old town and Piazza Tasso
culture
Wander Via San Cesareo, lined with shops selling limoncello, lemon soaps and ceramics, and visit the cloister of San Francesco. Look for inlaid wood boxes and furniture, a Sorrento craft tradition, in workshops around town.
- 5
Villa Comunale and Marina Grande
scenery
The Villa Comunale gardens have one of the best views across the bay to Vesuvius. Walk down to Marina Grande, a small fishing harbor with brightly painted boats and seafood restaurants right on the water.
- 6
Bagni della Regina Giovanna
beach
West of town, this natural rock pool surrounded by Roman villa ruins is a lovely swimming spot. It’s a short bus ride plus a walk down a path, and there are no facilities, so bring water and swim shoes.

What to eat and drink in Sorrento
Limoncello, made from the region’s fragrant lemons, is everywhere; many shops offer tastings. Try gnocchi alla sorrentina, baked with tomato and mozzarella, and delizia al limone, a lemon-cream sponge dessert. Provolone del Monaco and fresh mozzarella come from nearby farms, and Lacryma Christi wine is grown on Vesuvius’s slopes. Marina Grande’s waterfront restaurants are best for fish.
Tips for your port day
- Pick up tender tickets early if you have a set plan, such as a train or ferry time.
- The Circumvesuviana train is cheap but crowded and a target for pickpockets. Keep valuables out of reach.
- Don’t try to combine Pompeii, Capri and the Amalfi Coast in one day. Choose one and enjoy it.
- Lines for the last tender back can be long. Return to Marina Piccola with time to spare.

How do you get from the tender pier up to Sorrento town?
Walk up the steep road and steps, take a local bus or use the public elevator near the Villa Comunale gardens. Piazza Tasso is about 10 minutes away.
