About Puerto Madryn

Founded by Welsh settlers in 1865, Puerto Madryn is a pleasant, modern town on the wide Golfo Nuevo, surrounded by dry, windswept Patagonian steppe. Its beaches and waterfront promenade are nice for a stroll, but the reason cruise ships call is the extraordinary wildlife within reach.

Depending on the season, a port day might mean watching southern right whales close to shore, seeing thousands of penguins nesting at Punta Tombo, or spotting sea lions, elephant seals and guanacos on the Península Valdés. Those preferring a shorter outing visit the Ecocentro, a marine-life center, or nearby sea lion colonies.

It's a top port for wildlife lovers and photographers. Be prepared for long drives on the best excursions, often three hours or more round trip, and for wind and changeable weather.

Where cruise ships dock in Puerto Madryn

Ships dock at the Almirante Storni pier, one of the longest in South America, so there's no tendering. A shuttle or walk along the pier brings you to the waterfront and town center, where shops, restaurants and the beach promenade are within walking distance. Excursions leave from the pier area: the Península Valdés is about 1.5 to 2 hours away by road, Punta Tombo around 2.5 to 3 hours, and Gaiman about an hour. The closer Punta Loma sea lion reserve is around 30 minutes away. Long excursions are best booked through the ship.

Best things to do in Puerto Madryn on a cruise

  1. 1

    Península Valdés

    wildlife

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Península Valdés is home to southern right whales, which gather to breed from roughly June to December, plus elephant seals, sea lions, penguins, guanacos and rheas. Full-day tours visit Puerto Pirámides for whale-watching boats in season and coastal viewpoints for marine mammals.

  2. 2

    Punta Tombo penguin colony

    wildlife

One of the largest Magellanic penguin colonies in South America, Punta Tombo is home to hundreds of thousands of birds from about September to April. Boardwalks let you walk among nesting penguins. It's a long day trip, so check the timing against your all-aboard time.

  3. 3

    Gaiman Welsh tea houses

    culture

Welsh settlers founded villages along the Chubut River valley, and Gaiman still celebrates that heritage with traditional tea houses serving scones, cakes and torta galesa, a dark fruitcake. Tours often combine it with a visit to the paleontology museum in nearby Trelew.

  4. 4

    Ecocentro

    nature

Perched on a headland a short drive from the pier, this marine interpretive center explains the region's wildlife and ecosystems, with wide views over the gulf where whales can sometimes be seen in season. It's a good option for a shorter day.

  5. 5

    Punta Loma sea lion reserve

    wildlife

About 30 minutes from town, this reserve has a viewing platform above a sea lion colony and cormorant nesting sites. It's a quicker alternative to the longer excursions.

  6. 6

    Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio

    history

In Trelew, about an hour away, this museum displays dinosaur fossils from Patagonia, including some of the largest ever found. It's a highlight for families and fossil enthusiasts.

What to eat and drink in Puerto Madryn

Patagonian lamb, slow-roasted over an open fire, is the regional specialty, and Argentine beef and Malbec are on most menus. Seafood from the gulf, including squid and prawns, is also excellent. In Gaiman, Welsh tea comes with scones, jams and torta galesa. Dulce de leche and alfajores make sweet souvenirs.

Tips for your port day

  • Book Península Valdés or Punta Tombo through the ship; they're long excursions with little margin for delays.
  • Pack layers, a windproof jacket and sunscreen; Patagonian weather is windy and can change quickly.
  • Bring binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens for wildlife.
  • Wildlife seasons vary: whales are present roughly June to December and penguins about September to April.
  • Argentina's currency and exchange rules change often, so check current advice on cash and cards before you go.
