About Punta del Este
In the southern summer, Punta del Este fills with sunseekers from Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, and its beaches, yacht harbor and high-rise apartments give it a polished, upscale feel. Out of season it's much quieter. The peninsula divides the calm Playa Mansa on the bay side from the surf-pounded Playa Brava on the ocean side.
Cruise visitors usually walk from the marina along the waterfront, photograph La Mano on Playa Brava, then take a tour to Casapueblo, the dreamlike white building created by Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró at Punta Ballena. Others head to the trendy village of La Barra and its undulating bridge, or take a boat out to see sea lions at Isla de Lobos.
It suits beach lovers, art fans and those who enjoy a stylish, relaxed resort. If you're seeking colonial history or a lively local culture, Montevideo is more rewarding. Because it's a tender port exposed to wind, calls are sometimes canceled.
Where cruise ships dock in Punta del Este
Punta del Este is a tender port. Ships anchor in the bay and tender passengers to the marina at the tip of the peninsula. From the landing, the waterfront, shops along Avenida Gorlero and Playa Mansa are a short walk away, and La Mano on Playa Brava is about 15 to 20 minutes on foot across the peninsula. Taxis and tour buses wait near the marina for trips to Casapueblo, about 20 minutes away, La Barra and José Ignacio. Strong winds can delay or cancel tendering, so have a backup plan for a day at sea.
Best things to do in Punta del Este on a cruise
- 1
La Mano on Playa Brava
culture
Five giant concrete fingers rise from the sand on Playa Brava, a sculpture by Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal created in 1982. Also known as Los Dedos, it has become Punta del Este's best-known landmark and a favorite photo stop. Swimming here is not recommended because of strong surf.
- 2
Casapueblo
culture
Carlos Páez Vilaró spent decades building this sprawling, whitewashed structure on the cliffs of Punta Ballena. It's now a hotel and museum showcasing his art, and its terraces have sweeping views of the coast. Visitors traditionally stay for sunset, but cruise passengers usually visit earlier.
- 3
Isla de Lobos boat trip
wildlife
Boats from the marina circle this island offshore, home to a large colony of sea lions and fur seals. You don't land, but the noise and sight of hundreds of animals is impressive. Seas can be rough, so it's best for good sailors.
- 4
La Barra and the wave bridge
scenery
East of town, the village of La Barra has galleries, boutiques and beach bars, reached by a quirky undulating bridge, the Puente Leonel Viera, that rises and falls like a roller coaster. It's a fun stop on a coastal drive.
- 5
Playa Mansa
beach
On the bay side of the peninsula, Playa Mansa has calmer water and soft sand, making it the better option for swimming. Beach restaurants rent loungers in summer.
- 6
José Ignacio
beach
About 40 minutes east, this former fishing village with a lighthouse has become a chic retreat with beachfront restaurants and boutiques. It's a good choice for those wanting a quieter, upscale atmosphere.
